POST-SEASON REPORT: Neil Etheridge/Fulham FC (reserves)/Barclays Premier Reserve League (South) (Fulham F.C. Development Squad: 2nd out of 8 teams)
Neil Etheridge plays his last game of the season!May 9, 2012: West Bromwich Albion (reserves) 1 - 2 Fulham (reserves)The Philippines' first-choice goalkeeper Neil Etheridge finally plays his last full match for the 2011-12 season after sustaining a wrist injury he incurred during the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup. This last fixture for the Fulham reserves was an away game against the reserves of West Bromwich Albion, wherein they won 2 goals to Albion's 1. The Baggies deserved a draw but couldn’t produce the equaliser after trailing this scoreline at half-time. Once again Marcello Trotta was on the scoresheet on Wednesday afternoon, scoring his sixth goal in three games to earn the Whites the lead after 26 minutes. West Bromwich Albion responded eight minutes later through Kemar Roofe but Alex Smith's goal six minutes before half-time was enough to claim all three points. Fulham ended the campaign in second place, just three points behind Barclays Premier Reserve League South Champions Aston Villa. Read more of the match report at the Fulham website: www.fulhamfc.com/Club/News/NewsArticles/2012/May/ReservesvWBAResult.aspx#ixzz1uWB4fYG7Etheridge played the whole match. He is not expected to be in the senior squad for the last Premiership match against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend. The Cottagers will vie for 8th place at best this 2011/12 season. Stay tuned for more Post-Season Reports for Fulham and a Pre-Season analysis of what's ahead for Etheridge.

POST-SEASON REPORT: Neil Etheridge/Fulham F.C./Barclays Premier League, England (1st Tier)Fulham F.C. (9th out of 20 teams)The Road Ahead for the Pinoy Goalie13 May 2012: Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 0 Fulham The Philippines' first-choice goalkeeper Neil Leonard Etheridge did an impressive run this 2011/12 season for Fulham F.C., an experience he could have never forget. As the club's second-choice keeper David Stockdale loaned out to Ipswich Town by the start of the 2011/12 season, there was a talk during the pre-season if new manager Martin Jol would either put new acquisition Csaba Somogyi or reserves player Neil Etheridge, to backup Australia international Mark Schwarzer. Apparently, the coaching staff at Fulham pointed out to Etheridge instead, citing his performance during the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup. As discussed by our fellow cjeagle, Neil might have impressed the club's staff due to his composure in front of 100,000 hostile fans at the tournament's semi-finals both held at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium. Young as he is, Fulham's confidence grew with the lad who plays for a nation about 7,000 miles away from Britain. During that time, Etheridge was a regular starter for the reserve team. However, when it was time to go on-road with the first team, he would sit by the substitute bench, watching his mentor Schwarzer do his thing in the goalposts. He was patient enough to warm the bench, waiting for that time that he would step on the pitch for the first team, for the first time. Filipino fans were also hoping that day would come. And that time came, on the 14th of December, 2011. It was a do-or-die match for Fulham in the Europa League against Odense BK. With Schwarzer out from a serious injury, it was sort of a "baptism of fire" for the young keeper, who started the match at Craven Cottage. Etheridge seemed to trust his backline and they trust him. The American international Clint Dempsey was also confident of the lad not to concede goals. In return, Dempsey scored one of the two goals leading the Cottagers before half-time. However in the second half, it became a definite sign that Etheridge was quite inexperienced enough to not be fooled by the tactics of Odense's frontline. And it costed so much for the Cottagers as they drew 2-2 and got eliminated from the European competition. Nevertheless, Etheridge maintained his composure. Mixed reviews followed after the match. Fulham fans at the club's official message boards and social media pages were angered at the inexperience of Etheridge, although impressed with his calm composed self at that crucial match. Goal.com voters had Neil as their man of the match for Fulham, citing the way he blocked the numerous shots of Odense through the 60th minute, and again, for his demeanour. The following league match, David Stockdale returned starting for Fulham, following a return clause mandated by the club to Ipswich, and Neil was back on the bench again. After Schwarzer recovered, Neil was back playing again for the reserves, not to be used again for the seniors. Now, as the 2012/13 season looms for the Cottagers, having placed 9th this season after their loss to Tottenham, it was nevertheless a decent performance overall for the club despite the new management, and a turmoil that loomed over their vie for European competition. Etheridge would want to step up his game for the Whites as he faces more international competition while playing for the Philippines. However, playing for the first team again for Fulham's #38 will be a long shot to get with, as he competes with the newly acquired Somogyi and an up-and-coming player from the Fulham Academy, Marcus Bettinelli. Therefore, his career with the reserves must otherwise be a better one, given that it placed runner-up to Aston Villa in the Reserves League South. But, as he hopes to join the Azkals in their quest to lead the South East Asian football scene, and move Filipino football forward, he will have hope that the club would someday consider him the next-in-line for the Cottagers, so that he will establish himself as one of the trailblazers for Philippine football in the European arena. To Neil, good luck to your career. Mabuhay ka!Catch more analysis on our Pre-Season reports on the Filipino Footballers Abroad 2012/13 only in Usapang Football.

POST-SEASON ANALYSIS: Jason de Jong2011-2012 Season: -Persiba Balikpapan/Indonesia Super League, Indonesia (1st Tier (?)) -FC Dordrecht '90/Eerste Divisie, The Netherlands (2nd Tier) - reserves [/color] The De Jong Dilemma: On Again, Off AgainThe career of Dutch-based defensive midfielder Jason de Jong this 2011/12 season has been slow and less fulfilling. It was indeed a dilemma that never seems to end for this young defensive gun for the Philippine national team. He started 2011 ending his contract with BV Veendam, and began searching for opportunities to be closer to the national team as possible. After his Azkals appearance in Panaad Stadium on early February, he was called up to try out with Indonesian Super League club Sriwijaya. On February 20, he was released from his trials as he wasn't up to the standard the club was looking for. However, De Jong revealed on his Facebook page that he was offered a contract by Sriwijaya but didn't sign due to disagreements on the terms of the deal. He got another trial with another club, Persiba Balikpapan, and signed a contract worth US$80,000. In his debut, he started and played the full 90 for the match against Sriwijaya which ended with a loss. It was a debut where he was criticized by his coach for having an unsatisfactory performance and said De Jong needed more time to adapt. In his third and eventual final match with the club, De Jong played 28 minutes at the goalless draw with Arema. Indonesian media reported that during training, De Jong would consistently give excuses of fatigue and health concerns from arriving late or not attending at all. Also, during the match with Arema, after being subbed out on the game, De Jong was reported to burst into temper and left the stadium mad with frustration. With that, it apparently set the fate for De Jong, as indiscipline became one of the reasons why Balikpapan decided to release him. As head coach Michael Weiss heard of it, he decided to hold him from the seniors team, and instead stay temporarily with the under-23 team. He returned to the Netherlands thereafter. In June of that year, he began training with RBC Rosendaal, that then played in the Eerste Divisie. The club attempted to avoid bankruptcy by contracting players with an amateur contract to be able to play in lower divisions. However, De Jong's move wouldn't materialize as the club folded up after declaring itself bankrupt, citing failure to pay its outstanding debts. In August, he was called up for trials with another Eerste Divisie club, FC Dordrecht '90. During a tune-up game, he encountered fellow Philippine international Paul Mulders, an attacking midfielder. The photo below indicated hopes of having Jason back in club football. With that, he was eventually signed into the reserves team in September. In his debut match against the reserves of VVV-Venlo, he was booked for a bad tackle, a classic moment for this young gun. However, the match ended a 6–2 win for Dordrecht. After being impressed with his good runs, Coach Weiss eventually rescinded and let him with the seniors team, appearing in the friendly with Nepal and the Dream Cup match with LA Galaxy. However, the reserves league run for Dordrecht went into oblivion as it only managed a handful of wins against league minnows, and losing heavily against technically strong teams from the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie. In return, the club's reserves were the league's doormat this season, finishing at the bottom third. Before ending the season, however, he was offered to sign to UFL side Stallion, after negotiating with head coach and family friend Ernie Nierras. However, a better opportunity came before heading to national duty for the AFC Challenge Cup. Ayr United, playing for the Scottish First Divison, had him for a three-day tryout. In return, the club was impressed with his performance. Jason said he was set to sign with them. Unfortunately, Ayr's team manager Brian Reid revealed his fate with them is on a standstill, to quote: "I don’t think there will be anything happening on that front. Nobody will be coming in unless they are freebecause we also have budget concerns." Now that De Jong has finished his run this 2011/12 season, the road ahead will be uncertain for this promising lad. If anything, his club career must continue for him to improve his game and gain the Philippines recognition to the beautiful game.
