Beckham to get Games nod8 June 2012-PA Sport David Beckham will be the most notable inclusion when Great Britain's 35-man provisional Olympic squad is submitted. It represents the latest stage in a process that will end with the announcement of Stuart Pearce's final 18-man squad on 6 July. There has been a huge amount of debate around who will be the three over-age players in Pearce's squad. Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy, Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard have all been mentioned as potential candidates. Beckham's name has been a constant, mainly due to the influential role he played in getting the Olympics to London in the first place. The 37-year-old's popularity remains undimmed, even though he has not played his club football in England for nine years. He was greeted with rapturous applause at Wembley on Sunday (AEST) when given a special award for reaching 100 caps by UEFA, and Press Association Sport understands the former Manchester United midfielder remains amongst the players Pearce has submitted. There is little doubt Beckham's presence would help sell tickets for the football event, which features Great Britain's group matches at Old Trafford, Wembley and Millennium Stadium. It is yet to be decided whether the FA will formally announce the 35-man squad. theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1108969/Beckham-to-get-Games-nod

David Beckham not selected for London 2012 football squad David Beckham has not been selected for the Great Britain Olympic football squad. The 37-year-old former England skipper said in May he thought he had a "good chance" of playing at London 2012. He said: "Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. "I would have been honoured to have been part of this unique Team GB squad. Like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold." Beckham made manager Stuart Pearce's shortlist of 35 players but was overlooked for the final 18-man squad as one of three players over the age of 23 allowed to compete in the Olympics. Pearce, who watched Beckham play for Los Angeles Galaxy in the United States last week, picked Manchester City defender Micah Richards ahead of him. Pearce rang Beckham on Wednesday night to tell him the news, explaining that he wanted more defensive cover in the squad. Richards has been included alongside Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs and Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy as the three over-age players. Beckham, who signed a new two-year with LA Galaxy in January, was part of the Olympic flame handover ceremony in May, bringing it to Britain for the torch relay. He played a major role as a sporting ambassador when London won the 2012 bid, and has made no secret of his desire to captain Team GB. He said in April this year that he wanted to "be a part of history" by competing in the Olympics in his home town. London 2012 chief Lord Coe said he would be talking to Beckham about a role during the Olympics. "David has been an extraordinary supporter - probably our number one supporter - of the Games from the very beginning and is keen to continue his enthusiastic support right to the end," he said. "He is from East London and knows how important the Games and sport are to young people. He is a great role model." In January, Beckham said: "I have led my country before and know how special it would be to lead them into the Olympics." However, Pearce said in April: "He's been a great ambassador but that's no guarantee he'll get in the squad. I'm picking on form and merit alone. "David Beckham will be treated exactly the same as any other individual, whether it is young or over-age. "I have a duty of care to the Great Britain squad to try to win a gold medal. I will pick the strongest squad I can." BBC Match of the Day's Gary Lineker reacted to Beckham's omission by tweeting: "Never thought for a second that David Beckham would be excluded from GB's team. "Terrible shame for Beckham having given so much to the Olympic bid and football." Former Wales international and BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage tweeted: "Why was Beckham on the shortlist in the first place, then not pick him? Disgrace!" And Beckham's former England team-mate Danny Mills, who played under Pearce at Manchester City, told BBC Sport: "There's always an issue around the Beckham brand. We know how big he is - he's global, he's huge. But when it comes to football reasons, David Beckham can still do a job. "I think he would have been a great spectacle and I think it's a bit of shame he's not in there. "Stuart Pearce doesn't always like confrontation and he's struggled with big players in the past. Maybe he's thinking that what Beckham brings with him is too much to handle." The British Olympic Association said it had not received the final 18-man squad from the Football Association. A statement read: "We are expecting the list no later than the early part of next week." Team GB were drawn in Group A at London 2012 alongside Senegal, Uruguay and United Arab Emirates. They begin their Olympic campaign against Senegal at Old Trafford on 26 July before facing the United Arab Emirates at Wembley on 29 July, and Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium on 1 August. Each squad must contain 15 players born after 1 January 1989. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18624174

Among the favourites to win this Olympic football tournament are Brazil and Spain.
The Selecao as this early will be fielding their best side available by calling their promising under 23 talents like Neymar, Pato, Lucas Moura, Oscar, Sandro and company. Ganso may missed the tournament due to injury but coach Manu is making compensation by tapping the bulky Hulk as one of their overage player. The Brazilians are serious in this coming Olympics, the only major tournament left to complete their compilation of trophies and it also serves as a gauge on how far they would go in 2014 Rio World Cup, which they will be hosting.
La Roja fresh from winning this year's Euro Championships on the other hand will try to add the Olympic glory to their ongoing football renaissance. As a matter of fact they named Juan Mata, Jordi Alba and Javi Martinez, all members of their Euro Champions team. These three will link up with the nucleus of young side who won the UEFA under 21 Championships last year. A Euro and probably an Olympic title in the same year will be unprecedented for Spain.
One of the player in Spanish side that amazes me is Juan Mata. So far this year he already won the European double (club and international levels), the EUFA Champions League title with Chelsea and the recent Euro Championships crown with Spain. Aside from these two titles he also spearhead Chelsea's triumph early this year's FA Cup for which by the end of 2011-12 season he was named Chelsea Best Player of the Year beating the likes of teammates John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba. From being part of winning 2010 World Cup team, Mata has set aside pride humbly returned to Spanish youth side and captained them in winning UEFA under 21 Championships last year. It is very unusual for a player selected to play in his country's senior side to go back to junior or youth side as it was considered to be a demotion but Mata didn't any qualms about it. At the rate his career is going I think he will orchestrate plays to win coveted Olympic gold.
And how about Team GB? Aside from being a host which may boost their morale they also tap five players from Wales but none from Scotland and Northern Ireland. So 13 Englishmen and 5 Welshmen in their Olympic side . A team beset with injuries, I can see them win at least bronze.

LOL that lineup is ridiculous... All the starters play at the Primera or in the EPL, and all of them play at least in the top 10 teams in their respective countries.....
