i'm a bit disappointed with what transpired last night but i guess salvaging a draw against the asean champs isn't such a bad deal. hopefully, with a full roster on tuesday, we'll be bossing around the indons even in adverse weather conditions. laban lang, pinas! gotta bring my raincoat and rainshoes on tuesday at the rms - but i gotta buy my tickets first!

The result is ok with me At first most people believed that MAS will win the game due to the ff. - MAS has nearly full team line-up
- MAS is undefeated in their home turf
- MAS has home advantage
But we drew them even though we missed several key players. It's a good job for PH
PS. 1. Eric Dimzon is trolling again wew. Said by an Azkal fan on Azkals FB. 2. @dscpalami I'm sure it doesn't really matter that all match officials are Malaysians...

Everyone did well in containing the Malaysians at least. Everyone wants to see Chieffy with ball in near or inside the box, that was what's missing right there he seemed to be not 100% in that game. At least he has to make and try a shot but i didn't see it last night. Maybe he should come off from the bench next game Marwin should start? Mulders, for some time last night i thought he's way unnoticed. This guy is good no question about it but he has to step it up, i mean he has to be aggressive since he's playing attacking mid role. Maybe his game's affected due to our ugly mid creativity? Let's see it next game with James Y in the mid with him. Shrock, i thought he played really well he's been the spark of the team last night. He's all over the mid creating chances for our forwards. But yeah he had plenty of errors too, remember ugly crosses and passes? I can compare him with Arshavin of Arsenal after Cesc's transfer (atleast for last nights' game). Angel, yeah he loves to dribble that was evident last night but consider this --- less diving Seriosuly though i love his passion with the ball, he loves to win it he's fancy but sometimes too fancy that others call it ball hogging. Bob's constantly mentioning his work rate and that is true atleast Angel showed he's a threat at wings. Juani? He's played the LB quite well, what i didnt like was when Sabio had to cover him when he goes up. Our middle of the box looks scary and nude. And at his age, full 90 is a question, he has to be subbed especially against a team like Malaysia who really love to work and attack the flanks. Fresh legs coach! All in all i take the draw, we can’t expect much considering we still have lots of players missing. The Development of the team is so great, way better than beer and coffee.

Bob Guerrero's thoughts: Malaysia-Philippines postgame thoughtsBy Bob Guerrero | The Passionate Fan – 2 hours 7 minutes ago Malaysia didn't win because their strikers couldn't hit the side of a barn. Safee Sali, Norshahrul Idlan, and Safiq Rahim all either sprayed shots against the Azkals or shot straight at Roland Muller. The most wretched piece of finishing was Rahim's 50th minute miss. With the goal at his mercy, the captain tried to go for the top corner and missed completely. The home side had the better of the second half but couldn't make their chances pay. The Azkals didn't look cohesive in the midfield. With Stefan Schrock, Manny Ott and Paul Mulders in the mix, we might have expected some intricate midfield passing. It didn't happen. Far too often the Philippines resorted to speculative long balls, a strategy that failed to unlock the Malaysian defense. Schrock had lots of time on the ball but at times lacked the support to create. Having world-class players like Schrock on your team is great, but when the chess pieces have little time to cohere and gel, not a whole lot can be expected. Meanwhile, the Malayan Tigers looked like a team that have played with each other for years. Twice they unveiled cheeky dummies and we also saw a neat little backheel to set up another chance. We missed the Younghusbands. The Philippines just lacked that bit of magic. Mulders almost scored early off a volley, Denis Wolf had two chances in the first half that went begging, Ott shot once at the keeper, and an awkward volley was understandably not converted by Schrock. Had the brothers been there, it might have been a different story. They are riding high, with recent solid performances for club and country. On Tuesday they will be ready for Indonesia. Expect them to shine. This is not a result that will help grow the Azkals audience. Just like in any sport, not every game can be a classic. This was far from one, with both teams lacking quality in the attacking third. But we are still in the process of building a following for this team and the sport. Like it or not, we need goals, and lots of them. There are scoreless draws that the cognoscenti can appreciate for their nuances and subtleties. However those are lost on the casual fans. Lets hope the next two friendlies are high-scoring wins for the Azkals. We need to give more young players international experience. Neil Etheridge, who by the way had a fine commentary debut, bemoaned the lack of substitutions on air. I can't disagree with him. Yes, we need to win. Yes, the team is under pressure. But these are just friendlies and we have to think of the future. "There's only so much you can learn on the training pitch" said Darren Hartmann. The coach used four subs to bring on Misagh Bahadoran, Marwin Angeles, Ian Araneta and Jeffrey Christaens. However the last sub was in stoppage time after Juani Guirado came off with what looked like a knee injury. In contrast, Krishnasamy Rajagopal, the Malaysia boss, used five subs, most of them much earlier than ours. We need to blood our youngsters in these friendlies so they can grow and learn. I would have loved to have seen OJ Clarino get into the match. That is the kind of surprising, out-of-the-box, substitution we need. Hopefully the Guam game can feature more young blood for the Philippines. Systems equal success. Malaysia may have drawn two games in a row with the Philippines, but make no mistake. They are still light years ahead in football development. We only started training our U22 team recently. Meanwhile Malaysia has not one, but two permanent national youth teams, Harimau Muda A for players aged 19 to 22, and Harimau Muda B for those younger than 19. Harimau Muda A plays in the Singapore League while the B squad is in the Malaysian Premier League, the country's second tier of competition. (Harimau Muda means "Young Tiger.") Apart from International friendlies, the national squad has also played four friendlies against club squads already this year, and next month takes on Arsenal and Manchester City. We would do well to emulate their system that has brought so much glory to them recently. We've come a long way, baby. It did seem like an unsatisfying result. But let's put this in perspective: We have only beaten Malaysia once (in the 1991 SEA Games) and in our first four road matches versus Malaysia, we had always lost until Friday. Three years ago there would have been dancing in the streets of Barotac Nuevo with a result like this. That a draw will no longer suffice shows how far we have come as a Footballing nation. We're itching for a bad-ass Azkal jersey. I've been told that the plain white shirt the team wore is a mere stand-in. Puma, the Azkals new supplier, is allegedly readying something snazzier. I sure hope that's true. I also expect Puma to do a better job of meeting the demand for the kit. ph.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/thepassionatefan/malaysia-philippines-postgame-thoughts-020336585.html

My thoughts on last nights game.. Well, it was an ugly one during the 1st half. Both teams were opting for the long balls which was not fun to watch. maybe because they got intimidated with what schrock did during the early seconds that made them hesitate to do a passing game.. Our mid and forward couldn't connect that's why they were always stalled in the final third of the pitch. Schrockie is our best player but last night I think he wanted to prove himself a little too much. Wolf couldn't play a complete forward role like Phil. IMO Phil is a bit better than Wolf but Wolf's work rate is a notch higher than Phil's. (phil's sometimes lazy! ;D) So, if both play together....... Carli's side was our weakest yesterday. most of the attacks were done on his side and he couldn't keep up with Kunanlan <<< Very dangerous! Second half was much better.. but Malaysia became more dangerous as soon as they settled. We had a lot of poor passes and interceptions. The only good thing that happened was Marwin Angeles. Our game really changed when this kid was placed. I would rather have him starting than Chieffy. No offense, but I think the Coach only places in Chieffy and Ian for the sake that a local player is part of the playing squad. Honestly, if you look at the lineup and the depth of the squad right now our locals would be good only for the reserves. I want to see more of our youngsters like the angeles twins, reichelt, Christiaens and Beloya. For the locals i want to see the likes of Doctora and Morallo given playing time. It was a good result but I must say that we got lucky last night! For the indonesia match.. here's my wanted line-up: Etheridge Cagara --- Carli --- Gier --- Lucena JYH --- Mulders --- Guirado ---Schrock Wolf --- PYH Subs: Ott, Angeles, Christaens, Sabio, Chieffy, Misagh, De jong, Dorlas, Juani

Norshahrul Idlan Talaha wasn't very impressive last night. He's still not match fit after coming out from injury.

Azkals coach blasts Malaysian refs after friendly drawKarl Decena, InterAKTV · Saturday, June 2, 2012 · 9:05 pm Philippine national men’s football team coach Hans Michael Weiss blasted officials after its friendly match against Malaysia Friday night at the Shah Alam Stadium in Selangor, which ended in a scoreless draw. Curiously, the referees who called the match were also Malaysians. Traditionally, referees assigned to call matches are of different nationalities from the two countries playing to avoid calls that are favorable to one team. “We need to rethink about having local referees for international matches as one of our players was fouled and it should result in a red card,” Weiss told Malaysian tabloid The Star. However, Weiss still lauded his team for their gallant effort against the defending Suzuki Cup champs Malaysia, who have not lost a match in its home turf since 2009. “We played a fantastic game in the first half and had our chances of scoring but were not critical enough. I’m proud of my boys’ performance,” Weiss said. The Azkals will battle Indonesia on June 5 at the Rizal Football Stadium and Guam on June 12 at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod in friendly matches that will affect the Philippines FIFA world ranking which currently sits at 148th. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/azkals-coach-blasts-malaysian-refs-after-friendly-draw

@shank608 excellent point. We need to field our best starting XI no matter what origin. No more politics and media personalities trying to get sympathy from the public for not having too many home grown players in the starting eleven.
Nothing against our homegrown players. The time will come. Just look at what our U14 are doing. They are our future but this is the present.

Maybe Weiss wanted a 4-2-3-1 with Mulders at AM, but he always positioned himself as a withdrawn striker. So yeah, he was invisible because he was out of his preferred position. Same with the case of Schrock spraying passes. He's too impatient to be a productive CM. Caligdong had no way to shoot. He was off pace and never went into a dangerous area. It's probably best to bench him next game.

Cheffy doesn't have the killer instinct that he has before. look at the game during the Long Teng Cup where he end up winning the golden boot award, and the past few friendlies, he was a threat in our LW but seems like he lost everything after he suffered an injury prior to the Challenge Cup tournament

No word about the defense. How was it? Missed the game. Links to video replays would be appreciated. Links to youtube parts 2 to 4 should be shown on the right side as a "related video" Thank you! Just finished the first half. - Schrock is fast. He is all over the place and not making that last pass, however, which is not good.
- Mulders is not a forward. I don't understand what Weiss is doing. He is a holding mid and that's what he should be doing.
- The right back (De Murga?) was consistently being beaten and that's where most of the Malaysian attack was coming from.
- We owned the midfield! Excellent sign, and probably even better if Mulders was there. The first minutes, especially, when each Malaysian possession was challenged. The Malaysians got more crisp in the passing as the minutes went by and also did more back passing, but the Azkals still owned the midfield.
- The back four was okay. Again another good sign of improvement. In the few times they were tested they held, but I could still see one or two being out of position. And De Murga being beaten repeatedly as I mentioned earlier. Overall, a big improvement from what I've seen over the months.
- Very much the attack minded Weiss signature of play. Not reckless -- good. The give-and-go plays are there, indicative of players knowing one another better. Another good point.

Valiant Azkals hold ground vs MalaysiaJune 2, 2012 (Cedelf Tupas) SHAH ALAM – Stalemates against pedigreed sides often brought a good measure of satisfaction to the Philippines in the past. But despite giving Suzuki Cup champion Malaysia all that it can handle Friday night in a scoreless standoff at the Shah Alam Stadium, the Azkals were left ruing the missed opportunity of pulling off another upset. Nonetheless, it was a far cry from past results against the Tigers, who had dealt the Azkals a 4-0 beating in 2007 and a 4-1 crushing in 2004, before the two teams battled to a 1-1 drew last February in Manila. Parading new combination of players who had only two training sessions together, the Azkals valiantly held their ground in the face of the home side’s relentless attacks in the second half, while putting what was considered a stronger Malaysian team on their heels for most of the opening half. “It really just goes to show how far we’ve come when the team becomes disappointed by drawing against the Suzuki Cup champions,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami. “It was a very tough match but credit goes to the players for being resilient.” The match that drew about 15,000 spectators had few clear-cut chances, which mostly belonged to Malaysia in the second half. Fil-German goalkeeper Roland Muller had a solid outing and the Azkals survived the pressure, while Stephan Schrock pulled the strings at midfield early in the opening half. The Azkals were missing key players in Neil Etheridge and Phil and James Younghusband, who are all expected to return for the clash against Indonesia at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Tuesday. Denis Wolf, the scorer in the 1-1 draw against Malaysia in Manila, could not duplicate his exploits, narrowly missing on a left-footed effort in the 34th minute after a flowing move that started with Schrock’s free kick and Juani Guirado’s quick through ball. Paul Mulders also had a bullet of a volley barely going over, after getting a layoff from Wolf in the 14thminute. Substitute Marwin Angeles sent a low shot from just outside the wide after recovering the ball at midfield, and Angel Guirado caused problems with his physical presence going forward and nearly set up Schrock for a goal. But the Fil-German, who is coming off a three-week layoff, could only volley over in the 64th minute after Guirado’s cross was punched away by Malaysian keeper Mohd Marlias to his path. “In some respects it was a good performance,” said defender Rob Gier, who wore the captain’s armband for the remainder of the match when Chieffy Caligdong was substituted in the 55th minute. “We rode our luck a couple of times, but we also had a couple of good opportunities ourselves which showed the quality of the team considering that we only trained together twice before the match.” Malaysia couldn’t cash in on their opportunities as Muller and the Azkals defense were equal to the challenge. The best among Muller’s crucial saves came in first half stoppage time when he went full stretch to punch Shahurain Abu Samah’s shot into the post. Samah had earlier took the ball away from Mulders at midfield before going on a marauding run. It was Gier’s turn to rescue the Azkals early in the second half when he blocked Safiq Rahim’s effort when Muller was off his line. Rahim was a thorn for the Azkals side, but he blew three chances with the goal at his mercy as he combined well with strikers Safee Sali and Idlan Talaha. Palami believes the cohesion that Malaysia’s attack showed can also be achieved by the Azkals with more games together. Philippines coach Michael Weiss vowed for a better performance from the Azkals on Tuesday. “Automatically, the cohesion will be better,” Weiss said. “The defense was solid and compact. But we have to be more determined in front of goal.” The Azkals had one injury to worry about after the match as Juani Guirado left the game due to what appeared as a knee strain just before stoppage time. “It was a tough match and I think we faced a very good team at a high level in Southeast Asia, probably the best team Ive played at the international level,” said Schrock. “We did very good. We had a lot of opportunities to score with me and Dennis (Wolf). They were also lucky.” Schrock said he can still do better than his performance against Malaysia. “I was 3 weeks of now after 40 games in the season last year and I was a little bit tired,” he said. “Plus, I had a really long journey from Germany to Manila. Im a little tired and my legs are not working like I wanted it to be. But I think in the next few days Ill get my rhythm back.” phfootballscribe.wordpress.com/2012/06/02/valiant-azkals-hold-ground-vs-malaysia/
