sports.inquirer.net/17327/new-azkals-team-join-long-teng-cup-tiltVeterans Aly Borromeo and Chieffy Caligdong will lead the new-look Philippine Azkals when they vie in the Long Teng Cup in Kaohsiung, Taiwan from September 28 to October 4. Brothers Phil and James Younghusband are also in the side, which will unveil new players in Filipino-British Mark Hartmann, Fil-Belgian Jeff Christiaens, Fil-Spanish Carli de Murga and Fil-German goalkeeper Roland Muller and locals defenders Lemuel Unabia, Reymark Fernandez and Nickson Leonora. The newcomers form the core of the Under-23 squad for the Southeast Asian Games slated in November in Indonesia. Lexton Moy, a US-raised midfielder, and Fil-German defender Oliver Poetschke have also been included in the 20-man roster, along with regulars Angel Guirado, Jason de Jong, Misagh Bahadoran, Roel Gener, Ian Araneta and Eduard Sacapano and the returning Matthew Hartmann.

It looks like they are looking to pair Aly Borromeo with the tall Oliver Poetschke on central defence. That means it is possible De Murga will be placed at right back or right mid. This is a pretty competitive lineup and just needs time to get used to each other. The new additions will increase the competition within the team even further making for a deeper and stronger Azkal team down the line.

Jason Sabio and Nate Burkey dropped.
Angel did not play for Global FC or Azkals today , will he really go to Taiwan?

With all the new additions, I figured Nate and Jason were the most likely to go especially in the possession oriented type of game that Weiss wants to use. As for Angel, he just arrived. He probably hasn't gotten over his jet lag. Besides I am not sure if he has fully recovered from his injury yet. They probably want to see how he does in practice first.

From my observation from the Kaya vs Global games, Nate really was a none factor in it, although his play improved at the later minutes for Kaya, he just didn't impress. With Sabio, he was shakey in the beginning but was much more effective in the second half. He is very fast and seems to get settled after. Its too bad if he was dropped. Maybe Weiss could try Nate at Full Back, CB or OB. He's got the height and adequate speed... He did it for JYh, and it worked great. Whats impressive though was JYh at CB. I'll put what little reputation I have and say he is definitely faster than RobG and could possibly be better at it. "Possibly" but not yet. Its going to be exciting, this LTC with all the new Azkals! BTW, #17 Leonora? the local U23 player, watch him...

Can I speculate now the formation of the starting XI? 'Cause this hybrid senior/U-23 team will be exciting!
I project they will be more defensive on HKG (parking the bus?), more attacking and focus on wings against TPE, and well, just play good football against MAC.
I speculate in the starting XI against HKG that Aly and James YH will be part of the center defense, Lexton and Carli as LB and RB respectively. If De Jong should play, he can be defensive mid beside Matthew Hartmann. Chieffy and Roel Gener can man the attacking side. Either Phil YH or Mark Hartmann can front the team. I'm OK with Sacapano, but we can always give way for Mueller to have his debut for the NT.
Araneta and Bahadoran can be part of the lineup against Taipei and Macau. I wasn't happy on Araneta's performance against HKG. He either goes wide against their taller mids or gets too deep on the defense. The Belgians can take the mids on the weaker teams or be as subs. Poetschke can sub James YH if ever he's sent off.
Although I fear that if the defense goes too deep at the HKG match, it would either give way for the higher-stamina defensive mids to deflect passing attempts or make free space for their strikers to make attempts on goals. On Taipei, make sure they would keep away from too much long balls, the Taiwanese seem to see the long balls as opportunities for their intelligent wings to possess the ball. Macau's strong spot seems to be their outside backs. If they will park the bus against our team, Chieffy and Mark Hartmann should be forewarned that they must not lose focus.
Either way, I am really happy with this very strong combination of players. On to the victory! Go Azkals!

New Azkals team join Long Teng Cup tiltBy Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer 10:01 pm | Wednesday, September 21st, 2011 MANILA—Veterans Aly Borromeo and Chieffy Caligdong will lead the new-look Philippine Azkals when they vie in the Long Teng Cup in Kaohsiung, Taiwan from September 28 to October 4. Brothers Phil and James Younghusband are also in the side, which will unveil new players in Filipino-British Mark Hartmann, Fil-Belgian Jeff Christiaens, Fil-Spanish Carli de Murga and Fil-German goalkeeper Roland Muller and local defenders Lemuel Unabia, Reymark Fernandez and Nickson Leonora. The newcomers form the core of the Under-23 squad for the Southeast Asian Games slated in November in Indonesia. The Azkals, who finished third last year, kick off their campaign against Hong Kong on Sept. 30, before facing Chinese-Taipei on October 2 and Macau on October 4. Azkals manager Dan Palami believes they have assembled a stronger squad this time for the four-nation tournament, despite the presence of young players. “I think we can consider that the team we will be sending in the Long Teng considerably stronger,” said Palami. “The Long Teng Cup is geared towards allowing us to improve on our rankings and at the same time allow our new players to have more international matches to play together,” said Palami. The Azkals dropped three places in the latest Fifa rankings, slipping to No. 165. The Azkals actually prepared for their Suzuki Cup campaign last year by seeing action in the Long Teng Cup, where they lost to Hong Kong (2-4) tied Chinese-Taipei (1-1) and crushed Macau (5-0). “We have come full circle and and we will see how far we will go this time,” said Palami. “The new players are very promising. They are very good additions to the team and we’re eager to watch them in the international competition.” sports.inquirer.net/17327/new-azkals-team-join-long-teng-cup-tilt#_ Can anyone tell me what happened to van Bossche and Angelo Verheye??

Azkals to field mix of veterans, youthBy Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated September 22, 2011 12:00 AM MANILA, Philippines - A mix of veteran Azkals and under-23 players will carry the fight for the Philippines in the four-nation Long Teng Cup in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei from Sept. 30 to Oct 4. Skipper Aly Borromeo and seasoned players Chieffy Caligdong and Ian Araneta, the tourney’s top scorer with four goals last year, will banner the Phl side along with Azkals teammates Phil and James Younghusband, Angel Guirado, Roel Gener, Eduard Sacapaño, Misagh Bahadoran and Jason de Jong. Joining them are mainstays of the U-23 pool currently training for the Southeast Asian Games, led by Fil-German goalkeeper Roland Mueller, Fil-Spanish rightback Carlos Alberto Martinez de Murga, Fil-Belgian midfielder Jeffrey Christiaens, and Fil-British siblings Mark and Matthew Hartmann. U-23 bets Reymark Fernandez, Limuel Unabia, and Neckson Leonora and seniors Oliver Potschke and Moy Lexton complete the squad set to do battle against holders Hong Kong, host Chinese Taipei and Macau. “I think we can consider the team we’ll be sending over to Long Teng Cup this year considerably stronger than the team that we had last time. So we’re looking at better chances, better opportunities,” said Azkals team manager Dan Palami during a joint training of the seniors and U-23 teams at the Rizal Stadium. Last year, the Phl XI logged one win, one draw and one loss in the round-robin meet to finish third overall behind Hong Kong, then represented by its U-23 side, and the Taiwanese. Macau wound up fourth in that tourney. “As far as management of the Philippine national team is concerned, the Long Teng Cup (participation) is geared towards allowing us to improve on our (Fifa world) rankings and at the same time, allowing the players to really have more international matches to play together,” he added. The newbies, especially the U-23 booters, are being given exposure to test them in an international joust in preparation for the SEA Games in November, and future tournaments. “The new players are quite promising, actually not just promising but very good additions to team and we are eager to watch them in the international competitions,” said Palami. The Azkals will kick off their campaign against defending champion Hong Kong, to be represented by its full national team this time, on Sept. 30 at the Kaoshiung National Stadium. They will play the hosts on Oct. 2 then wind up their stint against Macau on Oct. 4. www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=729718&publicationSubCategoryId=69&keyword=sp_football
