Johor Darul Takzim line up five friendlies during break
By RIZAL ABDULLAH
Safee Sali
JOHOR Darul Takzim will not be idle during the three-week break in the M-League and have lined up five friendlies with Singapore clubs to keep the momentum going.
Coach-cum-manager Fandi Ahmad said the first of the friendlies is against S-League club side Hougang at the Larkin Stadium tomorrow followed by a match against H2O Dream Team in Singapore (venue to be confirmed) on Thursday.
The third match is against Geylang United on Sunday at the Larkin Stadium before they take on Singapore Armed Forces FC on Feb 6, also at home. The final match is against the Singapore Young Lions at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore on Feb 9.
“I will give my reserve players the chance to play in these friendly matches. They need match experience and exposure. With injuries taking their toll on the team, I have to be prepared for any eventuality,” said Fandi.
Johor Darul Takzim have been hit by a spate of injuries to key players. Topping the list is national striker Safee Sali who is out for three weeks with a left ankle injury when he accidentally stepped on a ball after a training session last Thursday.
Safee, who had to pull out from the national squad preparing for the Asia Cup qualifiers, is now on crutches. According to Fandi, Safee has torn ligaments.
Also injured are Johor Darul Takzim’s two foreign players. Former Spain international Daniel Guiza injured his left shoulder after he took a hard fall during the 1-0 win over Perak in a first round FA Cup match at the Larkin Stadium on Friday.
Former Lazio midfielder Simone Del Nero is currently back in Italy to seek treatment for a nagging hamstring injury and has seen only 30 minutes of Super League action during the 1-1 draw against last season’s treble champions Kelantan in Kota Baru on Jan 15.
Goalkeeper Al Hafiz Hamzah is also on the crock list and has not played since the opening match against Pahang in Kuantan on Jan 8. Johor Darul Takzim lost 3-2 after leading 2-0.
Johor Darul Takzim resume their Super League campaign on Feb 16 with a home match against Terengganu outfit T-Team, now coached by Englishman Peter Butler.

Winless Perlis happy with three-week break
By RIZAL ABDULLAH
PERLIS, out of the FA Cup and yet to record a win after five matches in the second-tier Premier League, welcome the three-week break in the M-League with open arms.
The M-League resumes on Feb 15 after the international break.
In the FA Cup, Perlis were beaten 3-2 by Super League’s T-Team in a first round match in Kuala Terengganu on Friday.
“It was our best performance this season. I am taking this as a yardstick to ‘relaunch’ our Premier League campaign. There is still hope as we have played only five matches,” coach Yunus Alif told sports247.my.
“I hope my walking wounded will recover to give me more options. We have managed to pull through with the help of several President’s Cup players.
The FA Cup match against T-Team saw the Northern Lions come back from two goals down to draw level and force extratime before losing.
“We could have won but for our poor finishing. Our failure to keep focus when it mattered most cost us. I hope the players will learn from the mistakes.”
Yunus was especially critical of Ghanaian striker Dennis Agware Antwi who muffed a sitter.
“We lack punch upfront. If we can remedy this, we will be able to turn the tide. Two or three wins when the league resumes should see us move up in the league standings.
“We paid dearly for not scoring in the home match against Kuala Lumpur, who won 1-0.”
Yunus gave his players four days off and training resumes in Kangar this Wednesday. They face title contenders Kedah in Alor Star on Feb 15.
Perlis were also rocked by allegations of match fixing. They have reported the matter to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and have handed a video tape of their away match against KL SPA FC.
The Northern Lions lost 4-2 after leading 2-1.

Rajagobal: We’ll live with what we have
By VIJHAY VICK
Datuk K. Rajagobal
IT is an injury crisis national coach Datuk K. Rajagobal has never seen before but the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup winning coach isn’t about to pin the blame on anyone.
Not only are the core of the team’s engine room and attack out injured, some of the selected replacements have also been sidelined. Even Felda United’s Sharizal Saad, who was called as a replacement to the depleted frontline, has been ruled out.
It is without doubt a depleted squad and fingers can be pointed at the FA of Malaysia (FAM) for the hectic M-League.
Rajagobal, however, wasn’t about to sing that tune as he felt enough had been said about the matter.
“I don’t want to say anything. So much has already been said by the coaches. Everyone has to take responsibility over this – the players too,” said Rajagobal, reserving his comments.
Observers and critics have pointed to the tight M-League schedule which saw teams play five league matches and the FA Cup first round in just 18 days since the 2013 season started on Jan 8.
Treble winners Kelantan and Armed Forces played an additional match as they locked horns for the curtain-raiser Charity Shield on Jan 5. Such a tight schedule can do no good to the players’ condition, and the season has only just started.
In addition to that, some teams can only play their matches in the evenings due to stadium lighting requirements.
As a result, Mohd Bunyamin Umar (Selangor), K. Gurusamy (Selangor), S. Kunanlan (Selangor), Gary Stephen Robbat (Harimau Muda), Mohd Fitri Omar, Hairudin Omar (both Armed Forces), and Safee Sali (Johor Darul Takzim) are all on the crock list.
Last year’s M-League Most Valuable Player Norshahrul Idlan Talaha remains doubtful while Wan Zack Haikal was seen in the FAM gymnasium earlier.
Another potential replacement, Amirul Hadi Yahya, who has found playing time once again with Pahang, is also out injured.
Rajagobal has decided to recall 2011 Super League top scorer Abdul Hadi Yahya, who now plays for Perak. Azmi Muslim has also been recalled.
“We have to accept that this is what we have. We have to make do with what we have and hope for the best. This is the first time under my guidance that we are facing an injury crisis such as this.
“I will take the next few days to assess the physical and mental conditions of the players before deciding what is the best available. It’s not going to be easy finding the right combinations,” Rajagobal said.
Malaysia play Iraq in a friendly on Feb 1 before opening their 2015 Asian Cup qualifiers against Qatar on Feb 6.

WITH the first match of the Asia Cup qualifiers around the corner, the injury worries have got worse with coach Datuk K. Rajagobal confirming seven players on the crock list.
“We can’t do anything about it and we can only call upon players who are registered (through the Asian Football Confederation),” said Rajagobal.
The coach, who took Malaysia to their first AFF Suzuki Cup victory in 2009, identified Wan Zack Haikal Wan Nor (Harimau Muda), Mohd Bunyamin Umar (Selangor), K. Gurusamy (Selangor), S. Kunanlan (Selangor), Gary Stephen Robbat (Harimau Muda), Mohd Fitri Omar (Armed Forces) and Safee Sali (Johor Darul Takzim) as the seven players who could potentially miss the match against Qatar on Feb 6.
“We also know that (Mohd) Farizal Marlias (Perak) is out with a light injury and Norshahrul Idlan Talaha (Johor Darul Takzim) still has his hamstring injury,” said Rajagobal.
Armed Forces skipper Hairuddin Omar and Safee, who were included in the first draft, will have to forego the Asia Cup action and will be replaced by Amri Yahyah (Selangor) and Shahrizal Saad (Felda United) respectively.
There have also been indications that Amiridzwan Taj Tajudin (Armed Forces) and Amar Rohidan (Felda United) are injured but their situation is not as serious as the seven mentioned earlier.
Having to meet what Rajagobal describes as the “best team in Asia”, Qatar will be a hard match.
“I had the opportunity to go to Bahrain and we know they’re on a different level from us,” said Rajagobal.
“They have naturalised players from Senegal and it’s a tough situation for us to face them.”
