Bintang Muda to defend title with new attacking style
By HO LEE CHING
N. Radakrishnan
DEFENDING champions CIMB-YFA Bintang Muda have incorporated a new playing style and coach N. Radakrishnan hopes his players will be able to adapt to it during the 1MCC Hong Leong Yamaha 2013 U-12 Klang Valley on Feb 16.
“We target to defend our title. The new style and system introduced involves a more attacking game. We have tried it out in our friendly game against Ulu Kelang Recreation Club (UKRC) today,” said N. Radakrishnan.
The new playing style, which was incorporated during training since a month ago was successful as Bintang Muda thrashed UKRC 10-0 in the game today.
“We still have eight of our players from last year’s team. They turn 12 this year. I am confident with the players. But I just hope they can adapt to this new system so that we are able to defend our title,” he added.
Last season, Bintang Muda had an impressive record. In the 32-team-league, they were the only unbeaten team who did not concede any goals.
“Most of our players have been with us for eight to nine years now. They have good discipline and attitude. I believe they have what it takes to be national players in the future,” said Radakrishnan, adding that he started coaching at Bintang Muda since 2001 at the main centre at Maktab Perguruan Teknik Cheras.
Bintang Muda FC is also looking to play in all regions hosting the 1MCC League – Klang Valley, Malacca, Johor, Penang, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan and Sabah.
“We are opening the Sabah centre on March 16. By June, we hope to have settled all our other centres. We want to develop players in all these areas,” said Radakrishnan.

RUN a football club like a business with a reasonable budget to ensure it succeeds, says Cardiff City FC chairman Datuk Chan Tien Ghee.
It might be a questionable approach, but with 15 games remaining, Cardiff City are proving that Chan’s philosophy works – the club are doing relatively well as they sit atop the English Football League Championship table are most likely to be promoted to the Premier League next season.
At the helm since 2010, Chan is looking into long-term plans to groom Malaysian players of calibre for the future.
“We have a development programme under the 1MCC (1Malaysia Cardiff City),” said Chan.
Chan, whose son Nicholas is currently playing for Kelantan’s President’s Cup team, realistically aims for five years for a talent to be produced and adds: “The important thing is infrastructure and we should always try to improve because it’s very competitive out there.”
Having brought the likes of Safee Sali and Safiq Rahim to train at Cardiff City, Chan prefers to look at the bigger picture as he reckons things cannot be fixed “overnight”.
“I think we still have to work hard and nothing is impossible once you put your mind to it,” he said.
“Back then no one thought a Malaysian would ever own a football club or airline and so on.”
Chan sees the launching of the new hub, Killiney Kopitiam, for Cardiff City and its fans as testament to the progress of football in Malaysia.
Chan officiated at the launching of the 17th Killiney outlet at Wisma Amoda in Kuala Lumpur today.

TOURNAMENT favourites Belia Asas Bersatu (BAB) had to come from behind to overcome Tanjung Bunga Rangers on penalties in the Penang Under-19 Amer Yusoff Challenge Trophy final at the City Stadium yesterday.
Surprise finalists Tanjung Bunga had been expected to be easy prey for the dominant BAB side that had been in free-scoring mode throughout the competition.
But the Rangers caught their fancied neighbours off-guard by putting up a feisty display and taking the lead five minutes into the second half.
Striker Faizal Jihadi latched on to a through ball from Firdaus Rashid to slot into the net.
But Tanjung Bunga managed to hold onto their lead for only 13 minutes with Faiz Shanol taking advantage of a weak back pass to equalise.
During the shootout, Tanjung Bunga missed two of their first three penalties while BAB converted all four to clinch their maiden Penang Under-19 title.
“My players made the mistake of under-estimating our opponents and we were nearly made to pay a heavy price,” said BAB coach Suhaimi Ismail.
“We were expecting to wrap up the final quickly, but I must salute Tanjung Bunga Rangers for lifting their game in the final and giving us a run for our money.”
Suhaimi described the win as a fitting end to a successful 2012/13 season in which the BAB senior team had finished second in the Penang Division Two league to secure promotion to the top flight.
“Several players from this successful Under-19 squad will be promoted to the senior team for the Division One challenge in the new season,” said Suhaimi, who also coaches the BAB senior team.

NTFA use experience to wrest Penang FA Cup

EXPERIENCE triumphed over youth as Nibong Tebal FA (NTFA) outsmarted Sungai Ara FC 2-0 in the Penang FA Cup final at the City Stadium last night.
A goal in each half from Haslan Abu Hassan and P. Vikneswaran, both coming off M. Prakash freekicks, saw NTFA preserve their unbeaten streak throughout the 2012/13 Penang league season.
Prior to kickoff, NTFA had been presented with the Division Two league champions trophy.
But they started on the back foot against the Division Three champions Sungai Ara, who had also been unbeaten throughout their league and Cup run-up till yesterday’s final.
Sungai Ara’s Nigerian winger Kazeem Adeolu had the ball in the net but his 30th minute effort was ruled out for offside.
Six minutes later, NTFA shot into the lead when former Penang captain Prakash whipped a freekick against the crossbar.
Haslan was the first to react to the rebound by bundling the ball over the goal line.
Sungai Ara started the second half aggressively, but could not breach the NTFA’s tight defence.
It was the former FAM Cup champions who doubled their lead in the 57th minute. Sungai Ara goalkeeper Isyafrial Azizly Ishak punched clear Prakash’s freekick but could only watch as Vikneswaran headed the ball back from outside the penalty box and into the top corner.
NTFA were reduced to 10 men in the 67th mimute when A. Muniandy was sent off for a reckless challenge, but held on for their maiden FA Cup title.
“I am proud of my players for completing the league and Cup double by staying unbeaten. We prevented Sungai Ara from playing their usual free-flowing football and the important thing was not to concede any goals in the final,” said NTFA manager Ong Eng Hua.
“The only blot was Muniandy’s sacking through a reckless challenge, which was needless as we were leading and it only added pressure on his teammates.”
