Little Azkals to face tough ASEAN sides in AFC U-14 championship qualifiers The Philippine national Under-14 football team will face tough opposition in what could be its biggest competition so far as the Little Azkals join the qualifiers of the inaugural Asian Football Confederation U-14 Championship in 2014. The Little Azkals, which have had success in various invitational tournaments abroad this year, will face Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, Timor Leste and host Myanmar in Group E of the Southeast Asia zone of the qualifiers. Meanwhile, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Singapore and Cambodia comprise Group F of the ASEAN qualifiers. The Little Azkals are no strangers to their neighbors in the region, beating the likes of Cambodia, Brunei, Malaysia and even Australia during their stints in several international football festivals this year, including a tournament in Japan last June where they finished third behind host Japan and Indonesia. In other draw results which were determined last week, Bahrain, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and United Arab Emirates and host Oman comprise Group A, while Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Palestine, Yemen and host Saudi Arabia form Group B to complete the brackets in the West Asia zone. Group C features Bhutan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Maldives, Afghanistan and host Nepal, while Pakistan, India, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan and host Iran play in Group D of the Central and South Asia zone. Meanwhile, China will host Northern Mariana Islands, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Guam in Group G, as well as Mongolia, Hong Kong, North Korea, Macau and Japan in Group H in the East Asia zone. Most matches for the qualifiers are expected to be played from February to March next year. The top two nations from each zone will qualify to the inaugural AFC U-14 Championship 2014 proper. www.interaksyon.com/interaktv/little-azkals-to-face-tough-asean-sides-in-afc-u-14-championship-qualifiers

2012: A STELLAR YEAR FOR THE LITTLE AZKALS 6:48 am | Friday, January 4th, 2013 newsinfo.inquirer.net/334899/2012-a-stellar-year-for-the-little-azkalsTHE Philippine Under 14 national football team otherwise known as the Little Azkals U-14 is once again one of those who made the Philippines proud with their achievements in Italy, Malaysia and Japan last year. After winning eight of their 12 friendly matches against junior Italian football teams while having a training camp in Palermo, Italy last May, the team made up of booters from all over the country went on to post three wins and two draws out of nine matches in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-14 Festival of Football (FOF) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. It was the team’s second time seeing action in the AFC FOF. Their first was in 2011 as the national U-13 team, wherein they finished with three wins and three draws in 10 matches. The team, however, nailed its biggest achievent in Osaka, Japan in June wherein they placed third in the Japan-East Asean Exchange Programme U-14 Youth Football Festival, trailing Japan and Indonesia, respectively. “It feels incredible to have finally achieved something for football in the Philippines at such a young age,” Little Azkals assistant team captain Josh Miller said. Team assistant coach Eliezer Fabroada said the team’s true test last year was in Japan because it was a tournament. It was the team’s 2011 AFC FOF performance that got them the invite from the Japan Football Association. The team was supposed to cap 2012 with three friendly matches against Singapore and a training camp last December, but both events were cancelled. “As per Singapore coach, their FA (football association) decided to cancel due to the busy schedules of their team and the FA. The training camp last Dec. 26 – Jan. 6 was also cancelled as only few players could come due to typhoon Quinta,” said an official statement from Little Azkals team manager Richard Montayre. With the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) prioritizing the sports’ grassroots development, some members of the team will move on to the Born 1999 national team who will see action in the Asian Youth Games in China, while some will go to Born 1998 national team who will leave for the United Kingdom and Australia for a training camp. He said that in initial talks with PFF technical director Jose Ariston Caslib, tryouts will be conducted for three national junior teams—Born 1999, Born 1998 and Born 2000-2001 who will compete in the AFC U-14 Qualifiers in June. “We will be looking for another date wherein we can gather all the players from all over the country for a tryout for additional players to be able to have a bigger pool of players,” said Montayre. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. I really hope the tryouts will have suitable notice so that youth from all over the country will have an opportunity to try out.

Tryouts should be posted in newspapers and Football related sites such as here in usapangfootball. It seems a good idea that PFF is breaking its age categories per year instead of 2 years apart.

PR / communications seems to be one of the weaknesses of the PFF in the past. Hopefully this will be improving so that everyone can have a fair crack at this important opportunity.

Instead of just organizing one tryout for the youth teams, I suggest that the PFF should be forming a a network of volunteer scouts from each FA, who will watch promising kids from all over the country in actual competition in their own locality and follow them throughtout the year, and then send their recommendations to the PFF who will then send their national team scouts to evaluate the best players and then invite them to a final tryout. In the future, we can also establish regional training centers to develop our elite players so that we can guide their development and finally a national training center where the national youth teams can stay and train for the various tournaments scheduled.

LITTLE AZKALS TO BATTLE CHELSEA FC on Jan. 25 7:32 am | Saturday, January 12th, 2013 newsinfo.inquirer.net/339335/little-azkals-to-battle-chelsea-fc-on-jan-25AFTER the cancellation of their three friendly matches against Singapore last December, the Little Azkals, or the Philippine Under 14 national football team, will go up against the Chelsea FC U14 squad on Jan. 25 in Manila. Little Azkals team manager Richard Montayre said Chelsea FC’s management wanted the match earlier but he had to move it due to the Sinulog festivities. They also needed time to get the permission of the boys’ respective schools as they want team members coming from Visayas and Mindanao to be there at least two days earlier for team bonding and practice. They would not have needed to be in Manila early if the training camp scheduled last December had pushed through, Montayre said. The training camp, which was scheduled from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6, was cancelled due to typhoon Quinta. The Chelsea FC U14, who is now in the country, had come from Korea and will be leaving the country on Jan. 28. Aside from the Little Azkals, the visiting team will also be seeing action against other junior teams in Manila. Montayre said that they are still negotiating on the venue either at the Rizal Memorial Stadium or in Alabang. He added that the Little Azkals lineup will most likely be the same as that in Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-14 Festival of Football (FOF) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. The 'Little Azkals' played only with 17 - 18 players as the four members had prior commitments from their schools in the province and in Metro Manila. They are the 2 Center Full Backs , 1 Winger and 1 Central Attacking Midfielder. How much more if the team was complete the scoreline would be much more than 6-1 in favor of our boys..

LITTLE AZKALS DEMOLISH CHELSEA IN FIRST MATCH
CAGAYAN de Oro’s Jeremiah “JB” Borlongan scored a hattrick as the Little Azkals once again showed their unbeatable team work by routing the Korean-based Chelsea FC Under 14 team, 6-1, yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in the first of their two exhibition matches. The Philippine Under-14 football team proved that they have an unbeatable bond despite coming from different parts of the country by surprising the visiting Chelsea FC with their press to the goal and their agility on the pitch. All of the goals in the match were scored in the first half, with Little Azkals team captain Jed Ramos Diamante of Davao starting the scoring spree with just minutes into the match. This was followed by Borlongan’s three straight goals. Davao’s Javier Romero-Salas further stretched the Little Azkals’ lead to five while Diamante capped the junior national team’s win with his final goal in the first half. Chelsea FC scored its lone goal in the last minute of the first half. The second half saw both teams scoreless. With the sizable lead that the Little Azkals posted, head coach Oliver “BingBing” Colina felt confident to field all of his players in the second half to give those on the bench enough exposure. “We dominated the first half but Chelsea was able to adjust in the second half and managed some counter attacks. We surprised them with our press and speed, it was clear that they weren’t expecting that,” Colina said. Despite having won convincingly, Colina said more adjustments will be done today in their second match against Chelsea FC at the Turf Bonifacio Global City (BGC) at 4 p.m. since he is anticipating that the visiting team will be making their own adjustments. “The Chelsea FC has a high-level of understanding of the game and they play physical,” Colina said. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G.
