Young Azkals, Harimau Muda gear up for SEA Games with goalless stalemate By Ivan Saldajeno MANILA--In another turn in the story of draws between the Philippines and Malaysia, the under-22 sides fought for another goalless stalemate in their friendly at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Thursday night. Ninety minutes of football did not separate both sides to emulate their senior and club counterparts in recording draws. The host team for the 2017 edition of the biennial meet showed an encore of its 4-1 domination over the 2019 host in Malaysia in their last meeting by going on attack mode in the first half, but the latter held on defensively and even came close to nailing a goal just before halftime as Jarvy Gayoso went on a one-on-one with the keeper only that the goalie saved the ball out. The U22 Azkals then turned the tides in the restart, going aggressive to the goal as the U22 Malaysians began losing steam. The U22 Azkals came very close to a goal in the 62nd minute as Jeremiah Borlongan got a piece of the ball just as a Malaysian defender was letting his netminding teammate grab it and flicked it to a now wide open goal mouth. The defender cleared the ball out just before it went in. Despite the fatigue setting in, Malaysia kept the Azkals in check, leading to the deadlock at the final whistle. Still, Coach Marlon Maro expressed positive feedback for the U22 Azkals. "I am satisfied because I saw a lot of potential.... We have a team that plays aggressive football that can catch up with Malaysia in terms of speed and agility," said Maro, who fielded in a team with a majority of people also eligible for the 2019 SEA Games. On the other hand, Coach Frank Earnhardt lamented the lack of readiness for the said friendly that cost Malaysia a repeat of its dominance the last time out. "Our players were tired from the holidays when they were called up, so we only have few preparations," he rued. www.dugout.ph/2016/12/young-azkals-harimau-muda-draw.html

12 March 2017 Young Azkals to play friendlies in Bahrain By Jaelle Nevin Reyes The Philippine Under-23 national football team will be playing back-to-back tune-up matches against its Bahraini counterparts at the Khalifa Stadium on March 24 and 26. The friendlies are part of the team’s preparations for the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this August. After holding a series of local friendly matches in the country against domestic top-tier clubs, the young Azkals test their mettle against the teams from the Central Asian nation. "We have a competitive squad in the U23 team whose players came from various clubs and schools. A vital step in the team’s development is to play more international matches,” Philippine Football Federation (PFF) General Secretary Edwin Gastanes said in a statement. “It is necessary that they play together as much as possible so they can be familiar with each other and have cohesion,” he added. The PH XI was held to a goalless stalemate by the visiting Malaysia U23 in Manila last December in its first international friendly. Meanwhile, the PFF has released the roster of players who will be part of the training camp in Bahrain. Young local stars Kou Ichi Belgira of JP Voltes FC, Kaya FC-Makati’s Patrick Franksson and Ceres Negros FC central defender Joshua Grommen will lead the young Azkals in the two friendlies. Also in the squad are Michael Asong, Nimrod Balabat, Jay-R Bucayan, Jimson Crestal, Franco dela Torre and James Pangasian of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football champion San Beda College. Joining them are University of the Philippines trio Daniel Gadia, Ace Villanueva and Julian Clarino, College of Saint Benilde standouts Earl Laguerta and Ian Milay and Arellano University top scorer Roberto Corsame Jr. Benguet State University’s Junell Baustista, Kaya FC reserves’ Ronilo Bayan Jr., former Global FC midfielder Andreas Esswein, Davao Aguilas FC’s Van Rey Diaz and Dylan De Bruycker complete the line-up. Long-time CSB Blazers football head coach and PFF official Marlon Maro will be at the helm of the Philippine contingent. www.manilatimes.net/young-azkals-play-friendlies-bahrain/316648/

Next week they fly off to Bahrain to play that country's U23 national team in a pair of friendlies on March 24 and 26. Maro, who is heading the SEA Games team for the second Games in a row, says the side will attempt to finagle a third friendly against a Bahraini club on the 28th. The team played a friendly on Wednesday night, succumbing to Kaya, 4-1. Previously they drew 1-1 and lost 3-0 against Loyola. There was also a 2-0 loss to UFL side JP Voltes. www.rappler.com/sports/by-sport/football/164316-mens-u22-womens-national-teams-battle

Although still a little over 7 weeks away, the SEA Games football tournament is the focus for many of our top footballers at the moment. The men's side for the biennial event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 14 to 29 is an under-22 team. Traditionally the SEA Games has been an under-23 competition but the organizers have decided to knock that back a year this time around. That means some very good Pinoy players are over-age for this tourney and can't play, namely vets from the 2015 edition, goalie Jun Badelic, midfielder Paolo Bugas, and striker Paolo Salenga. Marlon Maro is once again the coach of the squad, and his side will go through a very thorough preparation period that includes a proper competition before hand. The team leaves for Japan on July 6 for a week-long camp that will likely involve matches with tough club or school opponents. Then there will be a trip to Cambodia for Group J of the 2018 AFC U23 championship qualifiers. The Pinoys are in a brutal group with China, Japan, and the hosts Cambodia. This qualifying phase will run from July 19 to 23. There are ten groups and the group winners plus the five best second placers make it through. China are the hosts for the final stage next year but decided to join qualifying even though they are already assured of a slot. If they make it as one of the best second placers or as group champ, the top six second placers proceed. After that the team will likely stay together for more camps. There are actually two rosters for this side. The core of 20 players for the SEA Games has already been decided and submitted to the organizers. That roster includes 3 players from the UAAP champion Ateneo squad, namely Jarvey Gayoso, Rookie of the Year Jordan Jarvis, and Jay-Ra Rocha. Other notables include SEAG vets Ian Clarino, Ace Villanueva and Daniel Gadia from UP, Filipino-Japanese Kouchi Belgira and Yoshiharu Koizumi, and Davao Aguilas striker Kevin De Bruycker, a Filipino-Belgian. A player to watch will be Cagayan De Oro product Troy Limbo. He is in the youth system of English League Two club Chesterfield and should bring plenty of quality in the flanks. Maro says that unlike last time, when the deadline for the rosters was much closer to the start of the competition, Malaysia is requesting the team lineups to be submitted two months in advance. There are also only 20 slots instead of the usual 22 or 23. He did say that changes might be allowed in the event of injury. The coach will be taking along some additional players for the Japan camp, namely JB Borlongan, another UP Maroon, goalie Ronilo Bayan from Kaya Makati FC, Davao Aguilas right back JR Bucayan, Van Rey Diaz formerly of FEU, and ex-Global Mark Winhoffer, a Filipino-American. Sadly it seems these players won't play in the SEA Games. Centerback Marco Casambre, who made his senior team debut in the Suzuki Cup, is injured and is not part of either roster. There are a few players in the senior Azkals team who make the age cut off but Luke Woodland, Amani Aguinaldo, and Kenshiro Daniels are not in the line up and thus will miss out on their last chance to play in the SEA Games. The Azkals play Yemen in Bacolod on September 5 and will also have a friendly the week before, so it's very possible that senior team coach Thomas Dooley will want them with his team during the SEA Games. Maro says the preparation will be much better than in 2015, when he was a late replacement for outgoing coach Jim Fraser. The coach also says the team is more balanced now, meaning there are more players on the roster who are playing in their natural position. In 2015, as Maro tells it, there were too many players who had to play out of position. That team certainly lacked pure defenders. The coach understands that it will be very difficult to qualify out of the group in Cambodia, but that he welcomes the 3 tough, competitive matches the team will go through. “What is important is that we will know our strengths and weaknesses,” said the former Navy and national team player. www.rappler.com/sports/by-sport/football/173827-ph-mens-womens-football-teams-buckle-down-seag
