NO TIME TO SULK; AZKALS LOOKS TO MOVE ON AFTER CHINA ROMP GUANGZHOU—There’s little time to sulk for the Philippine Azkals on the heels of their worst loss in 15 years here. With a crucial AFC Asian Cup Qualifier coming up against Tajikistan in Dushanbe, the Azkals quickly shrugged off a heavy 1-8 defeat to China last Wednesday night in a friendly at Tianhe Stadium here. The team will try to figure out what went wrong against a strong Chinese side, which has now won 13 straight matches against the Philippines. While the attack looked threatening for most of the first half, the Azkals’ defense was exposed time and again by the technically gifted and more cohesive Chinese team. The loss was tough to take for the team with several players getting into a heated argument at the changing room after the match. “The game showed us how much we have to work to play at that level in Asia,” said coach Thomas Dooley who is now focusing on the Tajikistan match on Tuesday. sports.inquirer.net/251426/no-time-sulk-azkals-look-move-china-rout/amp

Just saw the highlights (lowlights). If anything it was the back line that could not match the skill of the Chinese front attackers. The Chinese were very good. Can't take anything away from that. Except for Patino I don't think there's anyone in our team that can match their vision and skill.
I thought Deyto actually did well considering the level of support he wasn't getting from the back line. He even saved a penalty. There was probably one goal that he could've done better, but it was already a dire situation to start with. Etheridge or even Areola wouldn't have done much better. A poor back line and a very good attacking Chinese team, and what happens is 8-1.

Or a Goal Keeper like Ethridge or Muller to do the same thing. Both Amani and Deyto don't have that skill. If our older NT will play this current NT, I'll choose the older all day because of our defense. With Juani on that back line.

Ugh. That was bad. How do you spin this?
Well, let us be very real what this was: This was the equivalent of the 5 year-old kid walking up to one of the bigger teenage boys on the block, and try to beat him in a fight. Well, the kid got sent home black and blue. The Azkals, as much as we want them to take on the big boys, are still very much the toddler on the world soccer scene. China spends more money on kit washers in one hour than the PFF spends on its entire program in one year. The CFA has dropped high eight to low nine figures in recent years on their soccer program. And, you are seeing the result.
Yes, 8-1 is hard to swallow. Dooley for USMNT Gaffer took a big hit. But, Dooley is trying to do three things at once: 1) Trying to make the Azkals COMPETITIVE on the world stage. 2) Trying to build a solid national League to draw players from. 3) Trying to build the Youth program in order to keep the developments going.
No question the defense looked horrible. Deyto proved that he is not ready to be "The" guy. You need to be able to communicate with your backline. With so many times exposed, you have to ask yourself what more could be done to keep the score down, Deyto looked more like Sacapano in there, and that is NOT a comparison he would want. It was just a bad, bad match all around.
But, now they need a result against Tajikistan in Dushanbe. Look, the Tajiks lost to Yemen. So, that should give the boys some hope. If the Azkals win, they could very well run the table. Even a draw would do wonders here. Lose, and question may well be asked. But, for those on the bandwagon that are calling for Dooley's head, keep the noise down. Dooley has done much with nothing. There are very few managers who could do the same.

I want to be clear in my opinion here -- Deyto was not that bad. It was the back line -- Woodland, Sato, Christiaens especially, who were lost out there. Deyto even had a really great save besides the one for the penalty. See 2:30 in the video below. GK sends a long pass to someone who is completely open (how could the back line make that happen?), and then Deyto misjudges and moves forward close to the edge of the box, then recovers and backs up so that when the player shoots on goal, he saves it. That wasn't an easy play. Then go to 5:10 to see him save the penalty. That was a foot save when he dove to the left but the player shot in the middle. Again, that foot save shows he can make a big play.
Give Deyto credit. It's the back line that needs to wake up.

We always have that problematic backline ever since Gier and Juani left. Only Aguinaldo and Sato is worth mentioning. That is why we could really use a player like Alvaro Silva to partner with Amani on the center back. We just have to search for another RB if Dooley is not keen anymore calling up Carli just to make our backline more respectable. And oh, what happened to Marco Casambre?

Rota, Carli are capable of playing RB I don't know what is up with this two players why they are not getting called up for the National Squad maybe because of Injuries and fitness. I think Schrock is also very capable of playing RB it was his main position when he was playing in 2.bundesliga and I think his fit to play and is currently in the country playing for CERES FC..

We looked like "headless" chickens in this game. We run from freakin everywhere, we don't have proper positioning and "man" marking. After seeing the game I just think they gave up, there was no heart. Maybe nerves played the part too. It would have been beter if they play a couple of "Chinese clubs" before playing China. To size up the opponents and made a "few" adjustments. There was no denying of China's football they're really good, its given. But again, we could've done a better job. If only Muller didn't resign his quality between the sticks is surely missed. He could've lowered the deficit.

China (8-1 against PI) is eliminated from the Russia WC, and so is Asean best Thailand. As usual, Japan, South Korea and Australia got the best possibility. From my Pinoy perspective the odds for PI in the WC is lower than an asteroid hitting the planet.
