FT GUM 1-4 PHI. A big win but not the best performance from the Azkals. Not belittling their effort but the match was largely dominated by Guam after the 15th minute. Strauss played offensively so we're left with an attack-minded midfield which had a hard time to contain the barrage of quick runs from the opposing players. We didn't have someone who can hold off the Matao attack from the midfield leaving the defense vulnerable for most of the game, which resulted to the PK. Fortunately the Azkals, making good use of Guam's slow defensive build up, scored two more.

09 March 2020 PFF Advisory: Postponement Of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Asian Qualifier Matches Following consultation with Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Member Associations, FIFA and AFC have decided to postpone the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022/AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2 matches scheduled on the FIFA International Window of 23-31 March 2020 and 1-9 June 2020. The postponement is brought about by concerns on COVID-19 which has struck several countries. Among the Philippines’ matches affected by the postponement are: 26 March 2020 – Philippines vs. Guam 04 June 2020 – China PR vs. Philippines 09 June 2020 – Philippines vs. Maldives The above matches will be scheduled to a later date upon further discussions between FIFA and AFC. Member associations however may, upon mutual agreement, still hold the matches during the FIFA International Match Window, subject to approval from both FIFA and AFC. FIFA and the AFC will continue to assess the situation in relation to COVID-19 and will decide whether further changes to the schedule of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 / AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2 qualifying matches are required, always with the aim of protecting the safety and health of all individuals involved. PFF exhorts the general public, all football stakeholders and fans to remain vigilant and take all necessary safety precautions amidst the current COVID-19 situation. pff.org.ph/2020/03/09/pff-advisory-postponement-of-fifa-world-cup-qatar-2022-asian-qualifier-matches/

Stalled by match cancellations due to pandemic, Cooper uses idle time to map out Azkals path By: Cedelf P. Tupas
It may take some time before the Philippine men’s football team sees action again with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic suspending competitions, including a World Cup and AFC Asian Cup Qualifying match this month, but Azkal coach Scott Cooper has kept himself busy, mapping out short and long-term plans for the program that players feel have made tremendous progress in the past year.
The Azkals are currently in third spot in their World Cup Qualifying group with seven points, behind unbeaten Syria and China, but they still have two more home matches late this year against Guam and Maldives and an away clash against the Chinese, whom they held to a goalless draw in Bacolod last year.
The performances have been encouraging as far as the Azkals are concerned as Cooper has injected a new philosophy and culture within the squad. Even with the 0-1 defeat to Syria in their last match last year, the Azkals showed they can compete against some of the best teams in the continent.
“The team is playing more offensive than ever and it looks like they can play against any other team anywhere,” Cooper told the Inquirer. “Our future is bright. We are very optimistic. And we’re putting plans in place to continue our development.”
“Suddenly, there is now a belief in the players and staff that performing well against much higher ranked countries isn’t rare,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami. “We’re more confident that we can be one of the best teams in Asia. There is certainly a paradigm shift in terms of the culture that we have in the team.”
Azkals captain Stephan Schrock feels an injection of a winning “DNA” in the team. “The team has undergone a complete renovation,” said Schrock. “We not only have a new system that matches the players we have – but also the opponent we play can be matched in a simple adjustment. Every player gets a fair chance to showcase what he can bring to the team. But the most important thing in my eyes is the winner DNA. We got happy with ‘we almost made it and we got so close’ in the past.”
Cooper stressed the importance of sustaining the progress even with the current situation. Working alongside team manager Dan Palami, the Irish coach set up the Azkals Development Team that will be part as guest team of the Philippines Football League, which has prompted collegiate star Jarvey Gayoso to forego his final year in the UAAP to join the team.
“We’ve been able to identify younger players with specific talents who have a bright future ahead,” said Cooper, a former Leicester City youth coach, who actually showed a keen eye for potential stars when he had 12 of his former club players called up for national team in Thailand.
Among the new players Cooper has discovered for a possible Azkals stint is 18-year-old homegrown star Lance Ocampo, who stood out in a recent friendly against Kaya Iloilo and against the Philippine Army.
“We’re revitalizing the current team, searching for new potential impact players while the ADT program is up and running,” said Cooper. “We just need results to back it up.” The Azkals are also seeing action in the AFF Suzuki Cup late this year and Cooper has maintained a positive approach during the pandemic by sending home nutritional and workout out plans for players as well as sending tactical videos.
Azkals veteran Neil Etheridge believes the team is moving in the right direction. “It’s been a pleasure being a part of the new look team as it’s going in the right direction and that’s exactly what I wanted,” the goalkeeper said. “We do look better and stronger than I have seen us and like I said there’s a lot more I feel we can add to become even better and a stronger force in Asia.”

27 April 2021 PFF eyes Azkals bubble buildup By Ian Suyu A three-week bubble training camp in Carmona, Cavite, is on the pipeline for the Philippine Azkals as it prepares to compete in the resumption of hostilities of the FIFA World Cup in late-May, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) said yesterday. PFF chief Mariano ‘Nonong’ Araneta said the PFF national training center is ready to host the squad. “We can do bubble training in Carmona. We’re looking at around three weeks of training then they will go to China,” said Araneta, who was also appointed as the country’s chief of mission for the Tokyo Olympics in July. Since the surge of the coronavirus pandemic last year, the national squad has not been able to compete in the international stage. In fact, its last appearance was more than a year ago, when it competed in the Southeast Asian Games last 2019. If the PFF plans push through, Araneta said that they are targeting to send the athletes to China on 29 May, just in time for the resumption of the competition. tribune.net.ph/index.php/2021/04/19/pff-eyes-azkals-bubble-buildup/

Relevant news from tweets from the Azkals Press Briefing today
PFF president Nonong Araneta confirmed that @theazkalsph will set up training camp in Qatar as part of the team's preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.
The Azkals will undergo coronavirus testing but will not be required to do quarantine upon arrival in Qatar for the training camp, per Araneta. Qatar Football Association will seek special permit from their national government for the Pinoy Booters.
Cooper added that @neil38etheridge is expected to suit up for the Azkals in the upcoming Qualifiers. Asked about the goals for the Doha training camp, Cooper is looking to prepare the Azkals at the 'highest level' for the upcoming June qualifiers.
Palami said that they will be bringing 26 players in the Doha training camp. Players are set to arrive to Doha on May 18.
Apparently they are arranging friendlies with Palestine and Syria at the camp.
The Azkals will take on Guam on June 3, China PR on June 9, and Maldives in June 15. Azkals' matches will be broadcasted live in the Philippines, per Sec. Gen. Gastanes.
Azkals' line up for the World Cup AFC Asian Cup qualifiers are still being finalized by Palami and Cooper. Asked about the goals for the Doha training camp, Cooper is looking to prepare the Azkals at the 'highest level' for the upcoming June qualifiers.
On Maranon's naturalization, PFF Sec. Gen. Gastanes said that they are following up on Malacañang if President Rodrigo Duterte has signed Marañon's naturalization bill. Even though it has been approved on both houses of Congress, the bill needs Duterte's signature to be enacted into law and must be published in the Official Gazette.
If available, Coach Cooper said that Marañon's goal-scoring abilities will give the Azkals advantages in the upcoming Qualifiers.

News on new additions to the Azkals including Maranon's naturalization “We are still following up information on whether the (naturalization) bill has been signed by the president already which should start the process,” shared PFF General Secretary Atty. Ed Gastanes. “There is still time and it will depend on the coaching staff on how Maranon can go to Qatar in the next two weeks. “Tall order but still doable because he has to secure a Philippine passport and we have to register him at AFC and convince FIFA there’s a provision in FIFA regulations about things of this nature and we are prepared to do that and justify it and normally FIFA answers very quickly also. In the past four or five weeks, we have received several approvals already from FIFA on some new players.” In terms of paperwork, defender Michael Kempter is as good as done as mentioned by Cooper. On the other hand, Gerrit Holtmann and Raphael Obermair are still working on theirs urgently to beat the deadline. “Our embassies abroad are very cooperative and accommodating in terms of dealing with the applications of our players for passports,” said Palami, who later noted that Obermair should be accomplishing his part today while certain restrictions may hamper the passport application of Holtmann due to the Bundesliga’s COVID-19 bubble. tiebreakertimes.com.ph/tbt/who-will-be-part-of-azkals-26-man-pool-for-fifa-world-cup-qualifiers/207437
