Azkals beefing up for two big tourneys Facing a tough road to the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar and the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in China, the Philippines will be looking to secure the availability of new players to shore up the squad in time before the deadline for registration ends on Aug. 5. Azkals manager Dan Palami said their wish list includes defenders Michael Kempter, Amin Nazari, Jesse Curran, Elias Mordal and Raphael Obermair. “The next two weeks will be critical for the backroom staff in making sure that we have these players in the lineup for the qualifiers,” said Palami, who has been managing the Azkals since 2010. “The work behind the scenes is equally important if we want to have the best possible squad there.” Kempter, a Fil-Swiss defender who plays for FC Zurich, already has a Filipino passport just like Nazari, but Palami said Fifa has required additional documentation for them to play in the qualifiers. Curran, who plays for Scottish side Dundee United, is also in the process of securing his Filipino passport. Born in Germany, Obermair is a former Bayern Munich player, but is currently tied up with Austrian side Sturm Graz. Palami said the player needs to personally process his passport in Berlin. sports.inquirer.net/358806/azkals-beefing-up-for-two-big-tourneys-breaking

06 August 2019 Schrock leads 39-man Azkals pool for WC qualifiers By: Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine coach Scott Cooper is set to register 39 players from where his 23-man squad will come from for the first round of World Cup qualifying matches against Syria on Sept. 5 and against Guam five days later. Captain Stephan Schrock headlines the list together with Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, who remains doubtful for the two matches after sustaining a hamstring injury in an English Championship match over the weekend. In an effort to widen his talent pool, Cooper named seven newcomers, including goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann from Germany, Michael Kempter from Switzerland, Raphael Obermair from Austria, Jesse Curran from Scotland and Elias Mordal from Norway.Young prospects Yrik Galantes, Niko De Vera and Mikel Justin Bass are also in the list. The 18-year-old Galantes, who can operate on either wing or through the middle, is under contract with Scottish club Hibernian, while De Vera is on the second team of the Portland Timbers. Asian Cup veterans Phil Younghusband and James Younghusband as well as Patrick Reichelt, who has starred in the Malaysia League this season, were also selected together with Amani Aguinaldo and Luke Woodland. sports.inquirer.net/360669/shrock-leads-39-man-azkals-pool-for-wc-qualifiers#ixzz5vpPCN9J6

Asian Cup vets, youngsters banner PH Azkals 23-man squad A handful of Asian Cup veterans and a slew of returning standouts make up the core of the Philippines’ 23-man squad that will take on Syria on Thursday at the start of World Cup Qualifying at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City. Captain Stephan Schrock of Philippines Football League champion Ceres Negros will lead the Azkals as they begin their quest for a place in football’s showpiece event in 2022 in Qatar. Players who saw action in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates early this year form the majority of the squad of coach Scott Cooper. They include Schrock, Javier Patiño, Patrick Reichelt, Daisuke Sato, Amani Aguinaldo, Alvaro Silva, Manny Ott, Mike Ott, Patrick Strauss, Kevin Ingreso, Mike Ott, Carlie De Murga, Michael Fakesgaard and Kevin Hansen. Putting emphasis on the players’ current form, Cooper also recalled several standouts who were left out in the past few tournaments and training camps. Defender Martin Steuble, who missed out on a spot in the Asian Cup, but has made an impact for Port FC in the Thai Premier League, earned another selection. Thailand-based Mark Hartmann, Marco Casambre and Angel Guirado were also recalled, along with Ceres players Sean Kane and OJ Porteria. Goalkeeper Patrick Deyto, who has impressed at Suphanburi even after a hand surgery sidelined him early this year, is also back in the squad. Out due to injury in the two previous camps in Thailand and China, Manny Ott also made the grade. But the most intriguing names in the list are teenagers Justin Baas and Yrik Galantes, who are based in the Netherlands and Scotland, respectively. Baas is a 19-year-old centerback currently attached with AZ Alkmaar’s Under-21 side, while Galantes is a promising attacking midfielder loaned by Scottish side Hibernian to Gala Fairydean Rovers. sports.inquirer.net/363712/asian-cup-vets-youngsters-banner-ph-azkals-23-man-squad

04 September 2019 Cooper gunning for Azkals reboot in Syria duel By: Cedelf P. Tupas BACOLOD CITY—With a new challenge looming, coach Scott Cooper is pressing the reset button on the Azkals. Forget about coming close to holding South Korea to a draw in the Asian Cup in January in Dubai or even the two losses to China early this year. Under Cooper, the Azkals are getting a fresh start as they plot a way out of their tough group in the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers that starts on Wednesday night when they take on Syria at Panaad Stadium here. “It’s about resetting the mind-set of the players,” Cooper told the Inquirer. “It’s time to win. We cannot afford to be stuck in the past, but we can take those good qualities and improve them and add more elements to it. We want a team that is confident and also aggressive.” The Azkals, who will also face Guam on Tuesday in the US territory, have been winless in almost eight months with their last victory coming against Timor Leste in the group stage of the AFF Suzuki Cup in Kuala Lumpur last November. But they’ll be at the familiar confines of Panaad as they test a Syrian side that boasts top attacking talent, including captain Faris Al-Katib, whom Cooper described as an “unbelievable and crafty player.” The Azkals also caught a break with former AFC Asian Player of the Year Omar Kharbin reportedly pulling out of the Syrian squad in anticipation of the birth of his child. “They’re (Syrians) very dangerous up front and it is going to be hard to keep a clean sheet against them,” said Cooper, who is designated as assistant team manager in the roster of officials since he lacks the pro license to be named the national team coach. Goran Milojevic is the assigned coach for the qualifiers, but Azkals manager Dan Palami said the Serbian reports to Cooper. Cooper said the Syrians are also vulnerable defensively and with Stephan Schrock and Javier Patino in fine form, the Azkals are capable of unlocking the visitors. Syria, which reached the fourth round of the last World Cup qualification phase, is 39 places higher than the Philippines at No. 87 in the Fifa rankings “They are 40 places above us for a reason, but playing in Bacolod is a leveller,” Cooper said. “We’ve got to find a way to make Panaad intimidating, let our opponents feel they don’t want to be there to face us.” Read more: sports.inquirer.net/364442/breaking-cooper-gunning-for-azkals-reboot-in-syria-duel#ixzz5yazrWEde

Their defence has always been their Achilles heel. They scored first but they couldn't stop Syria from scoring either.

They need another CB paired up with Alvaro silva. Hopefully they utilize the other younger defenders on the next game. even though silva is effective, he is also getting older. i think it would be good to give the younger CBs experience in games against Guam.

They were getting burned in the air and 1 on 1. I was a bit surprised he adopted such an offensive oriented formation against a higher rated team from our group. I thought that that new coach put a lot more emphasis on defence with goals against playing an important part on which team will advance from the group.

What the coach did was to play fire with fire which is not going to work because of our defense. I hope they learned a lot from that match. On Tuesday against Guam, I hope they score decent amount of goals to level up the goal differences.
