Hey everybody this format has been discussed before already.Read previous posts. laurel what you mentioning above is the format for the previous WC. A Chinese publication recently mentioned a new format again discussed previously. The AFC has not officially mentioned which of this formats will be chosen. I guess I will have to repost again for the newcomers.

Old Format Based on Previous World Cup found on page 1: For the first round of WC qualifying based on performance in the last World Cup which we did not participate, we are seeded last in the AFC. All that means really is that we will be put in the lower bracket for the first round for teams seeded 26-46. We will be facing teams seeded 6-25 who are in the upper bracket. The top 5 teams : Japan, Korea Republic, Australia, Korea DPR, and Bahrain have all been given byes into the third round. Our possible opponents for the first round are: 6. Saudi Arabia, 7. Iran, 8. Qatar, 9. Uzbekistan, 10. UAE, 11. Syria, 12. Oman, 13. Jordan, 14. Iraq, 15. China, 16. Singapore, 17. Kuwait, 18. Thailand, 19. Turkmenistan, 20. Lebanon, 21. Yemen, 22. Tajikistan, 23. Hong Kong, 24. Indonesia 25. Kyrgyzstan. Our best chance to qualify for the 2nd round is to be drawn against opponents in the lower half or lower third of this group which we will be playing in a 2 leg home and away series. This is of course based on 46 countries participating. One country will get a bye. This above list will change acc. to the no. of countries participating. If Brunei which is under suspension is not included, there will be no bye in this list. New format on Page 2: Acc. to Chinese source, there may be a slight change in format. Of course this is all unconfirmed. This is the article from Football rankings: 2014 FIFA World Cup: Asian draw in April? According to an article on Chinese portal Sina.com.cn, the preliminary draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup (AFC confederation) will take place in April. Thanks Filipino Football for the info! As usual, there's no confirmation on AFC's website, but that's the norm It seems Brunei Darussalam (suspended) and Laos won't participate. There's also a slight change in the format. In the 2010 FIFA World Cup preliminaries, the 8 lowest seeds advancing from the first round were required to play in the second round, while the other seeds involved in the first round were given a bye to the third round (the groups stage). Now, there will be a regular format - with less teams in the first round and more in the second round. Again, AFC won't be using the FIFA ranking. The Sina.com.cn article confirms the performance base seeding. First round First leg: 29 June, 2011 Second leg: 3 July, 2011 Pot A: India, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam Pot B: Mongolia, Palestine, Timor-Leste, Macau, Chinese Taipei, Myanmar, Bhutan, Guam, Philippines Pot A teams face Pot B teams. Second round First leg: 23 July, 2011 Second leg: 28 July, 2011 Pot A: Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, Uzbekistan, United Arab Emirates, Syria, Oman, Jordan, Iraq, China PR, Singapore, Kuwait, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Lebanon Pot B: Yemen, Tajikistan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives + 9 winners from the first round. Pot A teams face Pot B teams Third round Five groups of four teams. The draw will take place on 31 July 2011, with Japan, Korea Republic, Australia, Korea DPR and Bahrain entering the competition at this stage. _________________________________________ If this is true, there is a much better chance for us to get a good draw in the first round before encountering better opposition in the 2nd round. Draw for the 1st round is March 30.
