Hello everybody. Since not many (all?) saw the game live I thought it might be good to have a thread on the post-game analysis. Performance, coaching, formations, etc. Post your thoughts here.... My first one, even if I haven't seen the game, is that Lucena is barely mentioned. The forwards did well (Angel, Araneta), the back four was mentioned as solid (were they really?), but no mention was made of Lucena. I'd like to know how he performed.

in general, the holding midfielder is rarely mentioned when the team has a good game. i guess that was the case with lucena.

I'll try to look for the articles in which I've read that Lucena was great as the holding midfielder. He did a solid job, apparently

It is hard to make an analysis when you haven't seen any of the games in Myanmar but based on the scoresheet, articles written by the media, and twitter comments, I would like to make a few observations. One, we seem to have found Phil's strike partner at forward in Angel Guirado. In the past, the main defensive strategy of our opponents is to mark Phil Younghusband as tightly as possible with more than one defender concentrating on him a lot of the time. They can't do that anymore, since leaving Angel unmarked would allow a proven finisher all the time in the world to make his shots. Angel has also shown that he can create chances that Phil and the others can capitalize on. Second, we seem to be addressing nicely one of our weaknesses in the Suzuki Cup, our lack of depth. Coach Weiss used a different roster all 3 games in Myanmar and this shows the increased flexibility that the new players have provided. In the past, after losing such a key player like Phil Younghusband to injury, that would have proven detrimental to any chances we have of advancing but now we have the luxury of shuffling players from game to game without losing our competitive edge. With the return of Phil and the addition of even more high level players for WC qualifying, I am even more optimistic of our chances of advancing past the first round. Finally amidst all the euphoria, I would like to add a note of caution. As I mentioned before the game in my preview, the Bangladeshi team fielded mostly their U-23 squad from the Olympic qualifiers. We were not only more skilled and experienced than their team but also I believe faster, taller and more physical so we held all the advantages. In light of this I predicted that we would win handily and anticipated a 2-0 win. We not only matched that but exceeded that margin not only in terms of goals but also in terms of possession and chances created. As De Jong said when asked how impressed he was by our 2-0 win against Mongolia in Panaad, he answered I wasn't impressed at all. We were ranked much higher than Mongolia and therefore expected to win. When we start beating superior teams, then I will be impressed. Enough said! In the meantime let us celebrate and toast our heroes for a job well done.

As I've mentioned other threads, the key feature that stood out in this match was our aggression and desire to win the ball back, especially in the attacking 3rd. Look at the highlights and notice how quickly we closed down on the ball. We didn't wait to defend when the ball was on our defending 3rd. It was pressure, pressure, pressure from the start. And it did a world of good. But why couldn't we do it against Palestine or Myanmar? Why did we allow these teams time and space on the ball? I guess it has to with being confident enough... or desperate enough. The Bangladesh game was a must-win game so I guess we HAD to pressure with aggression. I just hope this becomes a permanent feature of the Azkals. ----- behoI don't think you'll find any Azkal haters here, mate. Critics such as myself, yes. Sorry but that's just the way we are. No offense given, none taken.

As what cjeagle said, it's hard to make analysis on games that we did not see i will still have reservations until we could beat the SEA powerhouses with such game strategy cjeagle and buddha sums up what's on my mind right now ;D so quiet muna ako and with US$1000 dangled in front of you, it would have surely elicit a positive mindset going into the game

A good indication that Jerry Lucena "the holding midfielder" played well is that the Azkals dominated possession and kept a clean sheet... But we have to see the game first...

First off,Congrats to the Azkals!
I talked to one of the coaches before the Challenge Cup qualifiers and he mentioned that they were impressed with Lucena during the try-outs. Good passing, simple and efficient ball distribution. A good defensive midfielder in front of the defense will make us even harder to break down.

as to why we played defensively versus myanmar, it's because they're the home team, and the proper tactical procedure in playing the home team with superior attacking (this was guirado's first game, remember>) is to get men behind the ball and hope for the counter.
