Schafer pleased with Azkals’ foreign-based stars' absence for 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup Thailand head coach is pleased his side will not have to face Philippines’ Europe-based players after the Azkals manager confirmed absentees for the AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 Nov 19, 2012 2:58:00 PM Schafer had flown to Cebu to catch the Azkals' game against Singapore, in which Philippines won 1-0. After the game, Philippines head coach Michael Weiss told Schafer that Bristol Rovers' Neil Etheridge and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim midfielder Stephen Schrock are among some players who will not be joining up with the Azkals in their Suzuki Cup campaign. "He showed good demeanour after we told him that Neil and Schrock will not play for sure, he even asked if this is true and gave a big thumbs up,” Weiss quipped on the Thai coach's reactions upon hearing the news. Philippines may not have some of their players joining up with the squad, but Schafer is still wary of the Azkals, who Thailand face on November 24 for their opening match in the Suzuki Cup. "They have big and strong players similar to Palestine,", said the German. "And more importantly, they play with understanding because they have good preparation and counter-attack [abilities]. "Hence, we have to be calm and pass accurately, we still have a couple of days to prepare." While still in the midst of their preparation, Schafer has also cut six-players from his preliminary squad, with another five set to follow before Schafer submits his final 22-man squad list for the tournament. Schafer has thanked the players who were axed for their contribution, and urge them to carry on working hard to be in contention for the Asian Cup qualifiers in January. The six players being sent home are Wichaya Dechmitr, Tana Chanabut, Jetsadakorn Hemdaeng, Attapong Nooprom, Surachart Sareepim, and Rattana Petch-Aporn. www.goal.com/en-sg/news/4424/2012-aff-suzuki-cup/2012/11/19/3538751/schafer-pleased-with-azkals-foreign-based-stars-absence-for-2012#I don't blame him for being relieved. Being German, he knows that Bundesliga player Schrock is a difference maker who would have caused all kinds of problems with other teams. It is still possible he might appear in the knockout stages though if the Philippines advances so don't hold your breath Coach Schafer.

Based on that article, NE won't play so we put our trust to Sacapano. Hope he'll do well in Group A Games. If NE will come, then it's a miracle

From: www.philstar.com/sports/2012/11/20/868887/azkals-fine-tune-early-cupAzkals to fine-tune early for CupBy Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) | Updated November 20, 2012 - 12:00am MANILA, Philippines - Azkals coach Michael Weiss expects intense sessions in the next four days as the Philippine national men’s football team gears up for the keenly awaited AFF Suzuki Cup kicking off Saturday in Bangkok. The Azkals leave for Thailand today via Philippine Airlines to familiarize themselves with the environs of the host country for the tough Group A and fine-tune their game plan for Saturday’s opener against the Thais. “We’ll have four sessions in Thailand and it will be intense. We’ll work on the small details, on compactness, on our offensive set-up, on our set pieces and we’ll have a very competitive group for training so everybody must prove himself again,” said Weiss. The German mentor will bring a pool of 25 to the Thai capital, from where he will pick the Final 22 on the eve of the tournament. Weiss underscored the importance of the very first match, against the hosts Thais at that, in setting the tone for the Azkals’ bid to make it to the semis or even the finals. After the Thais, the Azkals will battle Vietnam on Nov. 27 and then Myanmar three days after, hoping to pick up enough points to go deeper into the prestigious bootfest. “I’m reluctant to make a prediction because it doesn’t help me. I have to win (against) Thailand, that’s important. I would be happy already with a draw and then, we’ll take it from there,” said Weiss. Both the Azkals and the Thais have scouted each other in their respective pre-Suzuki Cup friendlies against separate opponents. Thailand coach Winfried Schafer actually went to Cebu to watch and take notes in the Azkals’ 1-0 win over Singapore but Weiss said the Phl can be an “unpredictable team.” “The Thai coach was there but I can bring in seven new players (from the Singapore friendly) so he’ll not know who will play from the start. What we just have to do is, we can’t sit too deep, we have to go a little bit out, and already put a little but pressure on the sideback and on centerback and the one’s picking up post from behind. That has to be rectified,” Weiss said. Fil-Dutch Paul Mulders and Fil-Danish Dennis Cagara are expected to join the Azkals for the Suzuki Cup, along with Fil-Danish Jerry Lucena. Last-minute negotiations are still on for the release of Fil-Spanish Angel Guirado and goalkeepers Neil Etheridge and Roland Muller. Thai tactician Schafer, meanwhile, is wary of the Pinoy booters. “They have big and strong players similar to Palestine. And more importantly, they play with understanding because they have good preparation and counter-attack. Hence, we have to be calm and pass accurately, we still have a couple of days to prepare,” Schafer was quoted by Goal.Com yesterday.

Looks like local-based players left today for Bangkok and foreign-based players will go directly to Bangkok where they will all undergo preparatory trainings. Then Coach Weiss with NT management will determine the final 22 line-up on Friday, Nov. 23. They're really giving a chance to everyone in the team. Suspense for us but all for the best!

as a pundit forcast, a draw in this game is likely. but an upset win against a home team Thai is more welcomed. I think coachMW will employ 4-5-1 form for midfield control here since they are having good results recently against higher rank mideast FC with this formation.

My prediction? Shall be based on the following: a. Younghusbands (particularly Phil) providing more feedings than the intention of scoring and let Denis Wolf and Chieffy or Ian do the scoring => 3-0 PHL wins b. Guirado in the pitch, instead of Denis Wolf or Phil or Chieffy, with Paul Mulder, Jerry & James => 2-1 PHL wins c. Younghusbands & Guirado in the pitch w/o Denis Wolf and Chieffy or Ian => 2-0 THA wins Hey, I'm no expert but I know how to play the game....
