Permanent move for Luke? Reporter: Matthew Chambers Date online: 16 April 2015 LUKE Woodland’s loan spell with Athletic could lead to a permanent deal being made in the summer. The 19-year-old Bolton player had his stay at SportsDirect.com Park extended until the end of the season earlier this week, despite a calf injury. Woodland hasn’t featured since the home draw with Bristol City, after which he returned to the Macron Stadium for treatment. It is hoped he will be back to stake a claim for a place in the Athletic side again soon. The fact boss Dean Holden extended his loan suggests that Woodland is a player who who will be on the list of potential signings this summer.

MEET TEENAGE FIL-BRIT AZKAL LUKE WOODLAND By Tricia Robredo on Jun 08, 2015 04:08 PM “I’ve been watching Phil (Younghusband) for a while and how well they’re doing. It looks like a good experience and I wanted to be a part of that.” While most of us are getting too tired and too antsy about the smoking hot weather in the Philippines, Filipino-British Luke Woodland shares that this is actually one of the things he loves most about being in the country. “When it reaches eleven degrees there, you have to be in your jumper and your jeans, and I don’t really like that. So it’s nice to come out here and have a change in climate. It can be a bit hot sometimes but I’m getting used to it!” Once a central midfielder for the English club Bolton Wanderers, Luke found his way to the Philippines to join the Azkals in the FIFA World Cup and the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers on June 11th. The country isn’t all that foreign to him, as his mother is a Filipina and a native of the province of Camarines Norte. But he really grew up in chilly England and built his football career there. He started at the very young age of eight, got a scholarship for playing at fifteen, and landed a professional contract at seventeen. He’s also been with their national team in his mid-teens. It’s no surprise that he caught the attention of our very own football team. The desire to have Luke Woodland play for the Philippines was mutual – the Azkals expressed their interest and so did he. “I’ve been watching Phil (Younghusband) for a while and how well they’re doing. It looks like a good experience and I wanted to be a part of that.” He was very open to talks with the team’s English representative and expressed little hesitation while being pursued. “So when they came over to watch me and my games, and invited me to come join them, I got my passport and left excitedly.” Now that’s quite a bold move, don’t you think? Especially for a 19 year old. When he first came in, Luke didn’t know that he was going to be the youngest. But the comments he’s been getting for being so doesn’t really bother him. “We’re a team and if you’re good enough to play, you’re young enough to play. As long as you have a strong squad, that’s all that really matters.” Luke was taken aback when asked what he would probably be doing if it weren’t football. He says this sport has been his life so for him, there is really no answer to that question. But despite having accomplished so much already, he says that this is only the start. “I’m striving to play the game for a long time like Rob (Gier). He’s been with the team for a long time and I want to be that one day.” Asked what he’s most looking forward to as a member of the Azkals, like his mates Phil and Rob, he says that it’s most definitely playing more and more games. What inspires him to keep grinding is the dream of having the most number of caps one day. But of course the more immediate goal right now is to bring the Philippines to the World Cup and show everyone what we’re all about. sports.abs-cbn.com/football/news/2015/06/08/meet-teenage-fil-brit-azkal-luke-woodland-2638

sports.inquirer.net/183648/luke-woodland-excited-to-don-ph-colors-in-azkals-road-to-world-cupAge is just a number. And for 19-year-old Luke Woodland, he is ready to face older opponents to help the Philippine Azkals achieve their glorious dream of making it to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. “If you’re old enough and if you’re good enough, it’s not about the age,” he said. “I just see that if you’re good enough, you can play. That’s my mentality.” Despite being the youngest in the 23-man pool, Woodland could not be considered as a novice as he represented England in the youth competitions up to the under-18 level. But now, the Fil-Brit midfielder is ready to showcase his wares for the Philippines. “It’s a massive responsibility and I’m excited and happy to carry that. Sometimes, it’s better to play with that pressure and responsibility, and I’m willing to carry that and I’m ready to go,” said Woodland, whose mother Juliet hails from Talisay, Camarines Norte. And he won’t let the opportunity go to waste. After all, it has been a long time coming for young Luke to be a part of the Azkals. “I’ve been following Rob (Gier), the Younghusband brothers, the Greatwich brothers, and seeing how well they’ve been on the Azkals and how great of an experience it was to represent the Philippines. It’s a massive achievement to represent the country and I’m excited to play.” Come June 11, Woodland promised there would be no letups once the Philippines take the pitch against Bahrain to kickstart its campaign to the World Cup. “We’re going to the game to get the win,” he said. I hope Dooley develops him as centre back. Amani and him could be our future centre backs!

Was Luke on the bench last nite? Any thoughts why he was not fielded last night?

he wasn't fielded because the AFC didn't clear him to play. I heard he needed to get clearance from the FIFA Players status committee to be able to play, and the PFF claimed that they turned his paper on time for clearance.

Luke Woodland was left reeling with disappointment after the defender missed the Philippines’ 2-1 win against Bahrain for the World Cup Qualifiers last Thursday night. The defender was hoping for a last minute clearance from the International Football Federation (FIFA) in order to play for the Philippines, but the decision never came. Woodland previously played for the England U16, U17, and U18 teams before joining the Azkals for his senior stint. “I just have to wait and see if I can get my clearance,” said a resigned Woodland after the Bahrain match. “Hopefully I can be able to play the next game (against Yemen).” According to Philippine Football Federation General-Secretary Attorney Edwin Gastanes, FIFA requires confirmation letters from the English FA, Northern Ireland FA, Scottish FA, and Wales FA before Woodland will be allowed to play for the Philippines. “Luke Woodland had to change his sporting nationality and there’s a process for that and it’s a very serious process for FIFA’s Players and Status committee,” said Gastanes. ” This is because a player can only change his sporting nationality once in his lifetime,” said Gastanes. The federation is just waiting for the decision from FIFA. “Once we receive (the decision) and submit it to AFC, Luke Woodland will be given an accreditation card (and he can play),” added Gastanes. Gastanes also said that Stephan Palla was in a similar situation as Woodland. The defender played for the Austria’s U17, U18, and U19 teams prior to making his debut for the Azkals last week but only had to get clearance from the Austrian FA. “They are already Filipino citizens because by our constitution, they are natural born Filipinos because they are born through at least one Filipino parent,” explained Gastanes. “They are natural Filipinos and we have to convince and explain to FIFA about that.” Woodland is currently in Qatar with the Azkals who play versus Yemen at 12:00 AM Wednesday, Manila time.– CAL football.com.ph/luke-woodland-awaits-fifa-decision/

PFF General Secretary Atty. World Cup Qualifiers: Woodland cleared to play for Azkalscnnphilippines.com/sports/2015/06/16/World-Cup-Qualifiers-Luke-Woodland-Philippines-Azkals.htmlMetro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has announced on early Tuesday morning (June 16) that the FIFA Players' Status Committee has cleared Luke Woodland to represent the Philippines in international competitions. This decision comes just before the World Cup Qualifying fixture of the Azkals against Yemen in Doha, Qatar. Woodland's case proved to be lengthier than expected due to requiring clearances from the English, Scottish, Northern Irish, and Welsh football associations. Stephan Palla required a similar procedure before being able to suit up for the Azkals, but only had to secure clearance from the Austrian football association. Prior to declaring his interest in playing for the Philippines, Woodland represented England at the under-16, under-17, and under-18 levels. The eligibility of Woodland comes as a boost for the Azkals after losing the services of Stephan Schrock and Simone Rota due to injuries. If selected, Woodland will make his debut for the Philippines late on Tuesday against Yemen at the Qatar Sports Club in Doha.
