U-23 booters draw lighter SEAG group AN eight-day training stint in Japan from Oct. 23 to 31 will get the Philippine national under-23 football team ready for the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia. Coach Hans Michael Weiss said that the preparations for the national team will have to be hastened now that organizers in Indonesia have moved the schedule of matches from Nov. 7 to an earlier date (Nov. 3). The Philippines is expected to have a lighter schedule in the SEA Games football competition after the team was put in Group B during Wednesday’s drawing of lots in Jakarta. The Filipinos are bracketed with last year’s runner-up Vietnam, Brunei, Laos, Timor Leste and Myanmar. Defending champion Malaysia is in a tougher bracket (Group A), along with Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia. “We want to give the players international exposure and have them experience games against university and high school teams in Japan, so that they are prepared for tougher games in Indonesia,†explained Weiss. The camp in Japan will be in Gotemba, the same venue the Philippines utilized when they prepared for the AFC Challenge Cup playoff match against Mongolia. Weiss will bring a 30-man squad to Gotemba, but a final cut of 20 will see action in the SEA Games. Among the players expected to make the cut are Fil-German goalkeeper Roland Muller, Manny Ott, Mark Drinkuth, Patrick Hinrichsen and Jeff Christiaens. Neckson Leonora is among the local players who could make the grade, along with Lemuel Unabia, Raymark Fernandez, David Basa, Paolo Pascual and Joshua Beloya. Indonesia international Irfan Bachdim facing six-month ban & fine for choosing modeling career over national teamwww.goal.com/en/news/14/asia/2011/10/20/2719565/indonesia-international-irfan-bachdim-facing-six-month-banThe 23-year-old is alleged to have missed national team duty in order to chase his modeling career, which has left the Football Associaiton of Indonesia furiousYoung Indonesia international Irfan Bachdim could be banned for six months and fined more than €8,000 for allegedly missing national team training in order to chase a modeling career. The naturalised 23-year-old, who has 12 senior caps, is reported to have been summoned for Under-23 national team duty earlier in the week, only to miss the sessions to take on an advertisement shooting job instead. The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) is furious with the situation and could come down hard to Irfan, however the youngster said he was never summoned for duty. “I read newspaper reports saying I ran away from the national team. That is not true. I really want to play for this country,” Irfan said via Twitter on Monday. “After the Qatar game, there was no information telling me to join up with the U-23 team, so I carried out an activity for one of my sponsors for two days." However, PSSI discipline commission deputy chief Catur Agus Saptono told kompas.com: “I have told Irfan that if he was found to have violated the rule, he would be charged under article 78 of the disciplinary code concerning rejection of a national team call-up. "According to the code, Irfan could be banned for six months and fined Rp 100 million (€8,235)." Indonesian national soccer team coordinator Bob Hippy was furious with Irfan and said he wouldn't be welcome back in the Merah Putih set-up. “Yes, congratulations. I wish him success in his new profession. Maybe he is more suited to that profession,” a furious Hippy told kompas.com. “This will not affect the national team. We need to be firm; no one is special. So, goodbye [Irfan]."

Irfan has already talked to the coach and asked for forgiveness. The coach has forgiven him but he said it is up to the disciplinary committee of the PSSI to decide if he will be allowed to rejoin the team. Final decision will be on Monday.

Apparently there will be no futsal team included in the SEA games as the funds needed were not given to the POC by the prescribed deadline as this article mentions:
Futsal, baseball miss SEA Games deadline By June Navarro Philippine Daily Inquirer 10:39 pm | Thursday, October 20th, 2011 12 share20 8
MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Olympic Committee could face sanction from the Indonesia Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee once futsal and baseball, which both confirmed their participation, decide to skip the Games.
Philippine deputy chef de mission Romeo Magat and the country’s SEA Games secretariat waited way past office hours Thursday for futsal and baseball officials to make the payment for the participation of their athletes in the Nov. 11 to 22 meet but nobody came.
Futsal entered its men’s and women’s teams of 12 players each while baseball planned to bring a 22-man squad.
The athletes of both sports were among the 110 private-sponsored campaigners and 21 officials for whom the POC extended the courtesy of stretching the deadline yesterday so they could join the already approved roster of 424 athletes and 140 officials to be funded by the Philippine Sports Commission.
“They (baseball and futsal) begged to be included and yet they didn’t show up when we asked for the payment,†said Magat.
Sponsors for futsal and baseball need to cough up P75,000 to P80,000 for each athlete for the duration of the Games.
“Their noncompliance would force us to remove them,†said Magat. “But that’s not the problem. We’ll be penalized (by the SEA Games organizers) since they’re already considered as official entries.â€
The POC had already paid the airline bookings of these athletes and officials.
Except for futsal and baseball, Magat said private backers of softball (17), bridge (13), sports climbing (2), judo (3), fencing (3), badminton (3), athletics (2), gymnastics (2), golf (2) and cycling (1) have already complied with the requirements.

Palami: Despite favorable draw, we have to train hard By Cheska D. Geli Thursday, October 20, 2011 “IT seems that we are in favorable group,†Philippine Under 23 team manager Dan Palami said the team got a break after getting a favorable group in the Southeast Asian Games this November. The Philippines is in Group B with 2009 runner-up Vietnam, semifinalist Laos, Timor Leste, Myanmar and Brunei, avoiding powerhouse teams Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore, which are in Group A along with Cambodia. However, Palami the draw is not a reason to be complacent as the other teams are also working hard for the first place finish. “It’s not a walk in the park that’s why we need to train harder,†said Palami. Though Timor Leste and Laos maybe considered minnows, both countries have started a grassroots program two years ago that is focused on its Under 23 and Under 19 teams. The Philippine team will be led by veterans Manny Ott and Jason de Jong, who have both played for the senior team in the Suzuki Cup preliminaries. Carlos de Murga, Jeffrey Christiaens and siblings Mark and Martthew Hartmann, who all played for the senior team in the Long Teng Cup, will also be in the squad. Roland Mueller will man the goal in place of Neil Etheridge, who is busy with his career in Fulham, though the PFF is trying to negotiate with Etheridge’s club to make him available for the SEA Games. Palami also said that a gold medal is a good motivation for the team, but for now, a more realistic goal is to reach the semifinals, to duplicate the Philippines best finish during the 1991 SEA Games. “We have young and good players. It’s a more decent lineup and stronger,†Palami said. The team will leave for a weeklong training camp in Japan on Oct. 21 and they are set to play three games against different universities. www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/sports/2011/10/20/palami-despite-favorable-draw-we-have-train-hard-186135

I'd rather not push Neil's availability for the SEAG. He's the #2 behind Mark S. there.
