Malaysia is sounding very confident in this article: www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/M...inted/Article/Deputy Sports Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim, however, said the draw should not matter as Malaysia would have to meet the strong teams eventually to retain the gold medal. “I am confident we can get through the group stage if the team employ the right strategy. As the defending champions, it is the other teams who should fear us.

Group B are Vietnam, Laos, Brunei, East Timor, Myanmar and the Philippines. Datuk Worawi Makudi, the president of the FA of Thailand (FAT) admitted that the team had a mountain to climb to regain the gold medal. “We are in a really tough group,†said Worawi. “I don’t know why they did not have seeding in the draw. But we have to accept it and be well-prepared for the task.†Added Thailand manager Kasem Jariyawatwong said: “We must be at full strength if we are to win the gold medal. We won’t underestimate any team but we are ready to face any team.†In the meantime, Thailand have announced their 20-man squad for the SEA Games with BEC Tero Sasana striker Ronnachai Rangsiyo leading the way. Football opener vs Vietnam importantBy KRISTEL SATUMBAGA October 20, 2011, 10:12pm MANILA, Philippines — Philippine football team coach Michael Weiss sees the opening game against Vietnam as crucial in their bid to advance to the medal round of the SEA Games in Indonesia next month. "Facing Vietnam in the opening match is a good sign for us. It will challenge us to play with the right strategies and inspire us to work harder in the next matches," Weiss said. The Philippines got a significant break when it was drawn in a relatively light bracket for the SEA Games football tournament. "Maybe it looks like we have a lighter load compared to the teams in the other group, but we cannot ignore that we have Vietnam and Laos, a semifinalist in the previous edition, in our group," the German coach said. Aside from Vietnam and Laos, also in their group are 2007 SEAG silver medalist Myanmar, Timor Leste, Laos and Brunei. The game against Vietnam is set Nov. 3. Next is Timor Leste on Nov. 7, Laos on Nov. 11, Myanmar on Nov. 13 and Brunei on November 15. The top two squads in the group will advance to the semis on Nov. 19. Weiss, however, was careful not to take Timor Leste and Laos for granted, saying they are also tough and dangerous. www.mb.com.ph/articles/338464/football-opener-vs-vietnam-important

Laos U23 and Brunie U23 both defeated Indonesia U23 (considering Indonesia as an advance footballing country) Agree! Although we are grouped favorably, Complacency in football is always not an option. Other teams besides Vietnam can really make an upset. Game face should always be on!

U-23 is looking good even without the full team. Final local friendly before embarking for training camp in Japan. Asean friendlie(Source futbol24.com) : 10/21 Brunei 0-4 Laos FT Malaysia 2-1 Myanmar FT Vietnam 1-1 Uzbekistan FT 10/20 Brunei U-23 2-1 Indonesia U-23 FT 10/19 Vietnam U-23 5-0 Myanmar U-23 FT Uzbekistan U-23 3-1 Malaysia U-23 FT 10/12 Laos U-23 3-2 Indonesia U-23 FT The win by Brunei over Indonesia is a little surprising even though Indonesia probably did not bring their full squad. Laos is strong at the U-23 level as I believed they reached the semifinals in the last SEA games which they hosted. Keep in mind however, that these are just friendlies, with teams experimenting with their lineups and players probably missing. So as you can see, we might have the easier group on paper, but nothing is a given. I still think we have a good chance of advancing as long as we don't get complacent. Correction: Acc. to an Indo source from another forum, Indo U-23 was in Jakarta playing local clubs and was never involved in the above losses. It is possible that these Indo games were played by a local Indo selection totally different from the official Indo U-23 team. Misleading info by futbol24.

Phl clouters SEAG bound; futsal stint still uncertain By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star) Updated October 22, 2011 12:00 MANILA, Philippines - Thanks to the private sector, the Philippine baseball team has averted an early strikeout in the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia. The Philippine secretariat to the Games scheduled Nov. 11-22 yesterday said businessman Marty Eizmendi has issued the guarantee of payment for the entire team. The baseball team, which won …the SEA Games gold in 2005 in Manila and the silver in 2007 in Thailand, was included to the Phl lineup after agreeing to pay for its own. With 22 players and a handful officials, the participation of the Phl baseball team may cost more than P2 million at an estimated cost of P80,000 to P100,000 per person. “Baseball is okay now,” said Phl deputy chef-de-mission Romeo Magat. However, the fate of the men’s and women’s futsal teams remained in the balance as they were given until Monday to meet all the monetary and documentary requirements. Magat said while futsal officials have indicated that they have raised enough money to pay for the players, 14 in each division, the problem may yet lie on their documentation. “The women’s team has clear documentation while the men’s side still has two players with invalid passports. We were told their passports are expired,” said secretariat member Clarito Samson. “So, they have until Monday to come up with the passports. But that’s if they no longer have problems with the funding. Otherwise, the men’s team can’t go, and the women’s team gets to compete,” Magat added. Eizmendi is a long-time supporter of Philippine baseball. A couple of days ago, Smart and PLDT chairman Manny V. Pangilinan pledged P10 million for the participation of athletes from basketball, boxing, football, badminton, tennis, cycling and taekwondo. “It’s time for the others from the private sector to step in and support our athletes,” said Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia. The PSC has only allocated P30 million for the SEA Games, which is just enough to fund 424 athletes and 140 officials. But there are 110 more Filipino athletes and 21 officials (technical, medical and administrative) knocking on the doors to Indonesia, and they include those from baseball, futsal, bridge (13), sports climbing (11), judo (3), fencing (3), badminton (3), athletics (2), gymnastics (2), golf (2) and cycling (1). www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=740035&publicationSubCategoryId=69It is a shame that San Miguel Beer no longer plays a big part in sponsoring sports teams to regional events. Ever since the Fil-Spaniards lost their control of SMB to the Fil-Chinese business interests, there seems to be less interest in doing this especially with regards to football related events.

In his followup to his analysis of Grp A a few days ago, here is Eric Noveanto's(author of SEA in Europe column in goal.com) analysis of Group B:
26th Sea Games – Football : Analysis of Group B
1. Vietnam, the most prepared very well team ahead of 26th Sea Games, they held some of international friendly tournament and got a satisfactory progress so far, have a certain quality of youngsters so that based on paper this group absolutely should belong to Vietnam.
2. Philippines, their football has improved a lot recently in both of senior and junior level, armed with the several of European based players, this team is predicted to show a major surprise in this tournament. Semi-finals is a realistic target for them.
3. Laos, have a very promising junior team in this year, showed a significant development in recent years, especially after the previous sea games in 2009, which they were the host. Predicted to be a “dark horse” that is able to subvert the dominance of the current Southeast Asian’s powerhouse during this period.
4. Myanmar, basically is the one of the “sleeping giant” in Asian football, especially in Southeast Asia, but lately they gave the appearance that far from the expectations of the Myanmar’s public. This team is probably to startle the other participants but still predicted to be struggled in the group stage matches.
5. Timor Leste, the 26th sea games will be their second appearance during their participation in this tournament, in general there are not many things that stand out from this team as the newly developing football nations. The quality of the team is still far below the fourth opponent, although slightly above than Brunei.
6. Brunei Darussalam, their return after the sanction given by FIFA last few years provide a glimmer of hope for the people of Brunei, by no means to discouraging their chances, they are predicted to be finished only in the group stage due to the quality of their current squad are deemed not qualified enough to compete at the top level of Southeast Asian football.
The Conclusion : the first position seems to have been booked by Vietnam, for the runner-up will be contested between the Philippines and Laos, while Myanmar may also have the potential to achieve it. In the other side, Timor Leste and Brunei Darussalam will likely struggle to avoid defeat by a big margin in the scoreline.

Sea Games-bound Azkals not taking foes lightly By Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer 10:33 pm | Friday, October 21st, 2011 41share302261 MANILA, Philippines—The Under-23 Philippine Azkals may have landed in the weaker group of the Southeast Asian Games football competition, but that doesn’t mean making the semifinals for the first time in 20 years will be a cakewalk for the national squad in Indonesia. The Filipinos face Vietnam on Nov. 3 at the start of Group B action at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. Also in the Azkals’ group are Myanmar, Laos, Timor Leste and Brunei. “A lot of people think that it’s seemingly easy,” said Palami of their bracket. “I think what we should realize is that teams like Timor and Laos have actually built very good youth programs for the past few years.” Azkals coach Michael Weiss echoed Palami’s sentiment, saying that the draw only looks “favorable” at first sight. “We cannot just thrash Laos and Myanmar like there’s no tomorrow,” Weiss said. “The first match will determine where we will go. I hope we can play with a compact and aggressive style against Vietnam.” The Philippines will actually be seeing action in the SEA Games football competition for the first time since 2005 when it won one match and lost two games. The country has not reached the semifinals of the event since 1991 when the biennial meet was held in Manila. Palami said they are still working on including goalkeeper Neil Etheridge on the SEA Games squad, after the Filipino-British goalkeeper was omitted from the initial list over doubts of his availability for the tournament sports.inquirer.net/21235/sea-games-bound-azkals-not-taking-foes-lightlyApparently Neil wants to come. However, I think it would be better for him to stay with Fulham, rather than give somebody else the opportunity to claim the #2 spot in his EPL club. Mueller, who is #3 at his club should be given the chance to show what he can do as a starter.
