Tiger booter chosen to join under-23 teamUNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas’ David Basa became the first homegrown talent to be chosen to join the national under-23 football squad seeing action in the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia this November. National coach Hans Michael Weiss told Basa that he’s going to join the Jakarta-bound squad after practice last Thursday at the newly renovated pitch of the Rizal Memorial Track Football Stadium. Basa will join Fil-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong, who wanted to rejoin the Philippine Azkals after he was fired by Indonesian pro football club Persiba Balikpapan for a contract violation with the Superleague club in Jakarta, but was instead inserted into the 23-under national team. The 22-year-old Basa, a defensive whiz, saw action for the Philippine Azkals national football team during the group stage of the 2013 Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifiers in Myanmar. Weiss has yet to decide on the final composition of the Azkals, who will play Sri Lanka in their first home-and-away match for the World Cup qualifiers. Weiss is in the midst of forming two teams, with the younger squad making up the national under-23 team to the SEA Games. The German coach said he’s having a difficult time choosing the players, who will suit up for the SEA Games in November. Weiss has set a modest goal of winning a bronze in the SEAG. Negros players endorsed to PFFBy FRANCIS SANTIAGO May 25, 2011, 12:19am MANILA, Philippines — Negros Occidental coach Norman Fegidero Jr. has recommended five players from his side, including highly-touted Joshua Beloya to be included in the pool for the national football team to the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia later this year. Strikers Beloya and Aldrin Dolino, Lemuel Unabia, defender Camelo Tacusalme and Joven Bedic helped Negros capture the 1st Philippine Football Federation-Suzuki National Cup at the expense of fierce rival Iloilo on Sunday. Fegidero, a former national head coach, believes their inclusion to the national squad would be a big boost to the country’s bid of winning a first ever medal in the SEAG since joining the biennial meet in 1977. “There are a lot more talented players in the province and I hope football officials will reach out to them,” said Fegidero moments after Negros blanked Iloilo, 9-0, in the second leg of their Suzuki title duel at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City. Negros also won the first leg, 3-1. Azkals’ German coach Hans Michael Weiss and team manager Dan Palami will handle the national squad for the SEAG, which is an Under-23 event. Beloya, a Filipino-American who was born in Olongapo but grew up in the United States and Sweden, made a lot heads turn when he was named the PFF-Suzuki National Cup’s best striker with 14 goals on Sunday, while Dolino, was awarded as the tournament’s MVP and Tacusalme, the best defender. “He (Beloya) has a great feel for the game and very dangerous inside the box. He’s greatest asset is his mental toughness,” Fegidero said. Fegidero, though, said he hopes the Philippine Football Federation has a solid program for players who would leave the province to join the national squad in Manila. Malaysia is the defending SEA Games champion, with Vietnam and Singapore as the second and third place finishers. The national team will be backstopped by six Azkals, according to Palami. They are goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, 21, Christopher Camcam, 16, defender David Basa, 21, striker Yannick Tuason, 21 and Fil-German Patrick Hinrichsen, 20, and Fil-Dutch Jason de Jong, 21. www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideSports.htm?f=2011/may/26/sports6.isx&d=2011/may/26Football out of SEA Games? DESPITE problems confronting the Football Association of Indonesia, which may affect Indonesia’s hosting of the 26th Southeast Asian Games, Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said the national under-23 football team will still continue their preparation for the biennial meet. Araneta’s statement came in the wake of reports that the International Football Federation may suspend the membership of the Football Association of Indonesia for its failure to elect a new set of leaders during its congress last Friday in Jakarta. “There is a problem in the hosting of the SEA Games. Baka sila ma-suspend at hindi matuloy ang SEA Games football sa Indonesia,” said Araneta after he was told by PSSI secretary general Joko Driyono that Indonesia has a “2000 percent chance of getting suspended by the FIFA.” The fate of the men’s football competitions in the SEA Games will now depend on the outcome of an executive council meeting, which the FIFA will hold this Friday in Zurich. If FIFA decides to suspend Indonesia, the ASEAN Football Federation will decide in its meeting on July 16 whether to hold the SEA Games football competition as a separate event. Araneta added that some complications may also arise from the suspension. He explained that if SEAG organizers decide to hold football as a separate event, the SEA Games Federation Council may also have to decide whether to include the sport in the medal count. “We’ll just have to wait for the FIFA decision. If Indonesia is suspended, maraming complications ang mangyayari,” added Araneta. Football officials in Malaysia, meanwhile, have sent feelers that they are willing to host the football competitions. According to reports published by the Jakarta Globe, FIFA’s ban on Indonesia from international football could include the World Cup qualifiers and the SEA Games. Last Friday, the scheduled PSSI’s elections ended in a deadlock as supporters of a breakaway group demanded that a ban on the nomination of two “reformist” candidates be lifted. Army chief of staff George Toisutta and oil tycoon Arifin Panigoro were among the candidates banned from contesting the vote for chairman, along with outgoing football official Nurdin Halid following allegations of corruption.

Since the SEA games is in November, Indonesia has plenty of time to comply with the wishes of FIFA. In the event the Indonesia is still banned though, the AFF are considering moving the football competition to another country as a separate event that might still count in the overall standings.

Football fans had feared the worst after the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) failed to hold an election this month. However, Agum Gumelar, chairman of the PSSI’s normalization committee, said on Monday that the association would not be punished, although FIFA set a condition for the reprieve. “They told us that the PSSI must hold an election before June 30,” Agum told the Jakarta Globe. “I hope that this time we will have an election and finally put an end to the leadership crisis in the PSSI.” Agum and PSSI acting secretary general Joko Driyono were informed of FIFA’s decision during a meeting on Monday with Thierry Regenass, FIFA’s director of member association and development, and Frank van Hattum, another member of Regenass’s committee. Agum is in Zurich to attend Wednesday’s FIFA congress. As the head of the normalization committee, Agum is Indonesia’s authorized representative at the Switzerland summit. Agum was told by FIFA that Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Toisutta, oil tycoon Arifin Panigoro and former PSSI officials Nirwan Bakrie and Nurdin Halid remained banned from the June election. FIFA also asked Agum’s committee to bring the breakaway Indonesian Premier League under the control of the PSSI. _________________________ That means the SEA games and the July U-23 competition might still happen. Hopefully the Indonesians get their house in order.

www.mb.com.ph/articles/321707/seag-team-gets-football-advisorSEAG team gets football advisor By FRANCIS SANTIAGO June 8, 2011, 12:12am MANILA, Philippines — Veteran German coach Erich Rutemoller has been named advisor for the soon-to-be formed Under-23 squad national football team to the Southeast Asian Games. He will assist Azkals coach Michael Weiss in preparing the team to a competition where the Philippines has established a reputation as the tournament’s whipping boy. Since competing in the regional meet for over two decades, the country has never contended for a SEAG football medal. The Philippine Football Association hopes to change all that with Wiess at the helm and Rutemoller backing him up. “He’s coming over because I want to make sure the team (U-23) will be given the same appreciation and attention like the Azkals,” Weiss said of his mentor. The SEA Games will be held in Indonesia from Nov. 11 to 25 in Palembang and the capital city of Jakarta. The assistant coach for the German national team from 1994-2004, Rutemoller, 66, will fly in the country on June 27, Weiss said. Dan Palami, who acts both as team manager of the Azkals and the U-23 squad, said they decided to hire Rutemoller to oversee the formation of the team in lieu of Weiss, who may not be around all the time since he is also preparing the Azkals for the qualifying tournament for the 2014 World Cup. The Azkals are set to face Sri Lanka in the World Cup qualifier on June 29. Rutemoller brings in him an impressive resume and experience that could help the country end its medal hunt in SEAG football since 1977. Aside from being head coach for Germany’s U-21 and U-17 squads, he also mentored the Iran national football team in 2009 and handled German club teams like FC Koln, Hansa Rostock and Bonner SC. ________________ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erich_RutemöllerThis guy seems to have better credentials than Coach Weiss. If Weiss falters, and Rutemoeller does well with the U-23, we could install him as head coach of the Azkals without insulting the DFB. Hopefully he could also help Coach Weiss on the senior team as well. He has experience coaching German national teams which is very impressive. Maybe Dan has been reading our posts.

Etheridge to reinforce SEAG teamFIL-American midfielder Simon Greatwich, Fil-Dutch Jason de Jong and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge will make up the core of the national under-23 football team seeing action in the 26th Southeast Asian Games in November. Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said Greatwich, De Jong and Etheridge lead a 40-member roster which the coaching staff submitted to the PFF. “The coaching staff has selected 40 names which they submitted to the PFF, and will be considered for the SEA Games team,” said Araneta during a birthday party for team manager Dan Palami. The 22-year-old Greatwich was dropped from the regular Philippine Azkals’ roster and was replaced by Fil-Dutch pro Paul Mulders, a 5’9” attacking midfielder from Amsterdam. “There are a lot of players in the midfield position (in the Azkals team) and it’s overloaded. So, we’d rather have him (Greatwich) in the under-23 team, rather than have him in reserve,” said Palami. National football team coach Hans Michael Weiss replaced Greatwich because he was apparently more impressed with Mulders’ performance during the team’s last few scrimmages. Mulders arrived in Manila only last Friday. Peter Atencio Link: www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideSports.htm?f=2011/june/11/sports4.isx&d=2011/june/11

Does anybody have the 40 man list? Etheridge might not be available because of club commitments if he is loaned out. Hopefully they got Falkesgaard to sign up.

As per Azkals United, here is the predicted list of the Philippines U23 team. But there is only 34 players listed if I'm not mistaken. Jason de Jong Simon Greatwich Christopher Camcam Ahmed Islam Neil Patrick Ignacio Patrick Hinrichsen Mark Drinkuth Paolo Pascual Yannick Tuason Mario Oj Clarino Mark Ferrer Patrick Deyto James Rochlitz Alwin (incomplete name) David Basa Deo Sigunial Miguel Mantelibano Nickson Leonora Renante Bayquin Francis Gustillo Romeo Martinez Vincent Braga Wilson Muñoz Denver Vergara Beloja Joshua Bedic Joven Dolino Aldrin Morallo Jake Palomo Gino Unabia Lemuel Replentes Jurex Malaloan Jimmy Jerry Barbaso Jinggoy Valmayor Uh oh, Neil Etheridge is missing. Does this mean he won't be available during the AFF U23 tourney? I liked the inclusion of standouts from the south such as Joshua Beloya, Jovin Bedic and Jinggoy Valmayor. These 3 lads are quite impressive. I hope they can convince Michael Falkesgaard to join the team as well.

Also missing from this list is OJ Porteria. I wonder if "Alwin" is the mysterious Alvin Sarmiento? EDIT: I traced the source to a blog by Roymondous. So, it's not an official PFF press release. (no offense meant, Rpbenchwarmer). The official list should come directly from the PFF website; ahh, ahh, what website?

www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=695735&publicationSubCategoryId=69SEAG row not stopping Azkals By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated June 13, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments SHARE: facebook share facebook yahoo buzz yahoo! buzz MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has set in motion preparations for the country’s quest for the elusive Southeast Asian Games men’s football medal in Indonesia even as the sport’s staging hangs in the balance with the host federation under threat of suspension. PFF president Mariano Araneta said 40 players, composed mostly of local standouts and reinforced by Azkals Simon Greatwich and Jason de Jong, have been nominated to the Phl under-23 pool, with training stints in Kuwait and Qatar eyed. “The pool will start training on June 22, and they are divided into the Luzon and Visayas training camps under coaches Roroy Pinero and Norman Fegidero,” Araneta said of the 40-man pool that will be handled by Michael Weiss after the Azkals’ stint in the Fifa World Cup Asian qualifiers. Top players from the recent PFF Suzuki U23 National Cup lead the candidates to the SEA Games, including tournament MVP Aldrin Dolino, Best Striker Joshua Beloya, Lemuel Unabia and Joven Bedic from champ Negros Occidental FA, and Best Midfielder Francis Gustilo, Wilson Munoz and Neckson Leonora from runner-up Iloilo FA. “There will only be eight Fil-foreign players in this pool, led by Simon and de Jong,” Araneta said, adding that Azkals’ Fil-British keeper Niel Etheridge, although still elibigle at 21 years old, will likely skip the SEAG

roymondous.wordpress.com/2011/06/12/philippine-u23-team/With the Under 23s getting ready for the SEA games in November, the Philippines look ahead to the future of football in the country. As the men’s national side are improving at each competition Manager Dan Palami and Coach Michael Weiss look to develop the youth to sustain their growth. The success of any side is built on acknowledging the strengths and weaknesses of players and developing a strategy to complement this. Spain, for example, recognised that their players weren’t the most physical and couldn’t compete as well in the air. However, realising that their shorter speedier players were more technical and agile they developed a strategy of possession-football, short passing controlling the game. What became known as tika taka has conquered the world through Barcelona and Spain, Barcelona winning La Liga and the Champions League while Spain are the reigning World Cup and Euro Cup champions. The Philippines face similar issues; like Spain the lack of height and strength is compensated for by speed and skill, embodied in players like Chieffy Caligdong, Ian Araneta and the recently retired Yanti Barsales. This is one of the reasons the Azkals have been a little inconsistent in friendlies lately, most recently losing 4-3 to the UFL All Stars. Fielding a new 4-3-3 formation the team is building its own style. Patience is the key as Spain took several heartbreaking losses in the World Cup and the Euro Cup, under-performing in both until blossoming to win the Euro Cup in 2008 and then the World Cup in 2010. Now dominating the world they are the benchmark and each team must develop their own strategies to complement their best attributes and to counter the strategies of others. In this manner several Azkals who frequently feature in the full team have been switched instead to the Under 23s to build both teams together. Simon Greatwich is perhaps the most notable example, the midfielder a frequent starter in the full National team. However based on this and what’s been happening in the rumour mill here is a predicted selection for the U23 team to play in the upcoming SEA games: Jason de Jong, Simon Greatwich, Christopher Camcam, Islam Ahmed, Neil Patrick Ignacio, Patrick Hinrichsen, Mark Drinkuth, Paolo Pascual, Yannick Tuason, Mario Oj Clarino, Mark Ferrer, Patrick Deyto, James Rochlitz, Alwin, David Basa, Deo Sigunial, Miguel Mantelibano, Nickson Leonora, Renante Bayquin, Francis Gustillo, Romeo Martinez, Vincent Braga, Wilson Muñoz, Denver Vergara, Joshua Beloya, Joven Bedic, Aldrin Dolino, Jake Morallo, Gino Palomo, Lemuel Unabia, Jurex Replentes, Jimmy Malaloan, Jerry Barbaso, Jinggoy Valmayor With seven players coming from Iloilo, eight from NOFA and nine from the National Capital Region the recent Under 23 tournament seems to have been successful in scouting players. Despite some of the problems faced during the tournament itself at least this is one positive which alone makes such tournaments well worthwhile. Selected here are thirty-four players, though the competition allows thirty-five. It’s possible that the Azkals will forfeit one place due to the strength of the other players and so fans are left to anticipate the games in the hopes that the younger Azkals can fight hard and even win a medal in Indonesia in the 26th SEA games.
