U-23 team needs help – Weiss By FRANCIS SANTIAGO July 6, 2011, 8:23pm MANILA, Philippines — German coach Michael Weiss is urging the Philippine Football Federation to also focus its attention to the needs of the football team being formed for the 26th Southeast Asian Games slated in Indonesia.
The squad started its training two weeks ago at the Philsports Arena with Azkals midfielder Simon Greatwich leading some 20 aspirants who showed up.
But Weiss, who also handles the Philippine Azklas, rues the fact that the PFF failed to provide the players – some of them coming from the provinces – their basic needs to sustain their training.
“I hope the football enthusiasm will keep growing and corporate sponsors will keep stepping in so that we can finance all this because right now it’s still difficult,” Weiss, 46, said after steering the Azkals to a 4-0 victory against Sri Lanka in the first round of the World Cup qualifiers last Sunday.
“For example our U-23 team, they don’t have training place, they don’t have accommodation, food, whatever. (It’s) very pitiful.”
The team faces a Herculean task of winning the country’s first ever medal in the men’s football of the biennial event and Weiss said football officials should also pour in the same support to the team they provide with the Azkals.
“We also have many, many super talents there (Under-23 team) and still the focus is mostly on Azkals. So I wish that we can go now on the younger stage and field the young ones because these are the future,” Weiss said.
Reached for comment, PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said they are now addressing their needs.
“Some players are billeted there (Philsports Arena) and their quarters need some blankets and pillows and other stuffs. We are now coordinating with the Philippine Sports Commission to address the problems,” said Araneta, which said they intend to spend P8 million for the entire SEA Games preparation.
The biennial meet begins from Nov. 11 to 25 in Palembang and the capital city of Jakarta and the PFF has actually given the Under-23 team a shot in the arm following the appointment of veteran German coach Erich Rutemoller as its advisor.

they should be supporting the yong ones kasi they are the future. paano makapagbigay ng karangalan sa bansa tong mga to in the futre kung walang suporta.wag yung puro azkals lang.the azkals can only take us so far.the best thing they ever did aside from the glory and honor they gave for our country was to mae pinoys aware and love this sport.

Actually, if they want to meet Dan Palami's goal of qualifying for 2018 WC, it is these young ones who will be paving the way, and some of them will be the hard-core veterans of the team for that campaign when that time comes. I would say a large number of the current senior side have 3-5 years between them. It is this U-23s who will step up after them.

Who were the sponsors during the U23 tournament? Hindi na ba sila nagsponsor? They need media attention also. Paging ABSCBN. TJ Manotoc covered the U16 at least.

With the postponement of Asean Football Federation Under-23 Championship what would happened to some foreign-based prospects who invested much to lend their talents to under 23 side. . . For instance youngsters like James Rochlitz and Ohjay Porteria who has forsaken their studies in the United States in order to spend more time training in the Philippines. . . What would the PFF authorities have to say to their parents who dole out a lot of finances shouldering their sons' air fares and allowances while staying in the Philippines ? ? ?

The AFF U-23 event may be postpoined, but the SEA Games isn't. The U-23 Championship is a pre-SEA Games event. So the question here is whether the U23 team will participate in 1 or 2 tournaments this year.

I read in one of the threads that OJ Porteria has enrolled at La Salle Greenhills, so if true, he's practically a locally based player. It's a bit more complicated for college kids, especially those receiving athletic scholarships in the US. As Cjeagle has mentioned, November is within the college soccer season. As a student athlete on scholarship, you are obligated to not only meet academic requirements, but also to play for the school that's giving you an education. An extended absence during the schoolyear that may span a couple of months or more to try out and prepare for the U-23 tournament/s is not a viable option for these students. A happy compromise has to be found, for at this stage of our development, these foreign based players are needed not only to enhance our winning chances, but also to help the locals with skills transference.

Lasalle greenhills ? So OJ will be eligible to play RIFA football against the likes of Xavier, Southridge and Ateneo? Hmmm...suddenly the onus is on LSGH to win it all this year. (NCAA i-lista na as kanila.)

If the AFF is canceled. The U-23 team should just play UFL teams for warm ups?

As per Azkals United, here is the predicted list of the Philippines U23 team. But there is only 34 players listed if I'm not mistaken. Jason de Jong Simon Greatwich Christopher Camcam Ahmed Islam Neil Patrick Ignacio Patrick Hinrichsen Mark Drinkuth Paolo Pascual Yannick Tuason Mario Oj Clarino Mark Ferrer Patrick Deyto James Rochlitz Alwin (incomplete name) David Basa Deo Sigunial Miguel Mantelibano Nickson Leonora Renante Bayquin Francis Gustillo Romeo Martinez Vincent Braga Wilson Muñoz Denver Vergara Beloja Joshua Bedic Joven Dolino Aldrin Morallo Jake Palomo Gino Unabia Lemuel Replentes Jurex Malaloan Jimmy Jerry Barbaso Jinggoy Valmayor Uh oh, Neil Etheridge is missing. Does this mean he won't be available during the AFF U23 tourney? I liked the inclusion of standouts from the south such as Joshua Beloya, Jovin Bedic and Jinggoy Valmayor. These 3 lads are quite impressive. I hope they can convince Michael Falkesgaard to join the team as well. Can this be a stickey? Or anything close to it so it would be easier to keep an eye who's on the team so far. It would be nice know the positions they play also. Just a suggestion. Thanks.

update:
World body gives football a green light
PHILIPPINE Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta said it’s a go for the 23-under national team for the 26th Southeast Asian Games.
Araneta happily relayed the news after the FIFA, the world governing body for football, lifted the threat of suspension over the Football Association of Indonesia, which elected a new president over the weekend.
Djohar Arifin Husin, the former secretary general of the Indonesian Sports Committee, was elected as the new football association chief during polls held in Solo, Indonesia.
Djohar, the former secretary general of the Indonesian Sports Committee, got 61 votes as opposed to the 38 votes earned by Agusman Effendi, to clinch the presidency.
The FIFA earlier threatened to suspend Indonesia from its membership if its football association failed to elect new leaders before July 10.
The subsequent lifting of the threat of suspension will pave the way for Indonesia to host the football games of the 26th SEA Asian Games.
“Tuloy na ang SEA Games. Ito (election) ang requirement ng FIFA para matuloy ang football sa SEA Games,” said Araneta.
Araneta said he’ll meet with coach Hans Michael Weiss and team manager Dan Palami to discuss the composition of the national under-23 team.
The members of the national under-23 pool currently practice with the Philippine Azkals at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex football pitch.
Araneta added that the ASEAN Football Federation will also convene on July 31 to discuss the new schedule of the ASEAN under-23 competitions. Peter Atencio
