www.mb.com.ph/articles/326536/ph-under23-team-gets-backerPH under-23 team gets backer By FRANCIS SANTIAGO July 12, 2011, 10:36pm MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine football team preparing for the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia got a big boost Tuesday after Suzuki Philippines expressed its willingness to support the team. With the success of the Azkals, the PH U-23 squad is determined to win its first-ever medal in the men’s football competition slated in Jakarta and Palembang. With three months to go before the Games, Suzuki president Satoshi Uchida said they will coordinate with the Philippine Football Federation for a possible sponsorship deal with the Under-23 squad lacking the resources its senior counterpart – the Azkals – enjoy in abundance. “We’re considering every ways to help the team. We will talk to the PFF to discuss possible sponsorships for the team,” said Uchida, 52, in Tuesday’s press launching of the Hometown Heroes featuring five Azkals members. Azkals co-team captain Chieffy Caligdong, Ian Araneta, Yannick Tuason, Roel Gener and Paolo Pascual were tapped to be the endorsers for the Suzuki motorcycles in a campaign that hopes to highlight the city roots of the homegrown players. Uchida declined to divulge financial help the company is willing to extend to the SEAG team, but assured they are willing to back the team all the way to the SEA Games. Suzuki is no longer stranger in helping football. A couple of months ago, it spent more than P3 million for the staging of the 1st PFF Under-23 national championship, a tournament from which the current pool for the SEAG team was picked. PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta expressed elation on the Suzuki’s pledge. “We’re very happy about it,” Araneta said in a separate interview. “It shows that the company has faith in football.” Meanwhile, Araneta said the Azkals are bothered by the controversial rape allegation on four members of the team, but assured that the squad remains focused on their preparation for their second round meeting with Kuwait in the World Cup qualifiers. “They are affected but not demoralized,” Araneta said.

Zuzuki to sponsor under 23 team ! that's good news ! ! ! at least we can move on forward with the preparation of SEA Games in November. . . Though some foreign - based prospects who came for initial trials went home to their respective countries most notable is James Rochlitz who had departed for United States.

Bumping this up on the message boards as this is the next challenge along with the Long Teng(?) Cup and the Manila Beer Invitational which I presume will have their own threads as details become clearer.
Re the U23 team, Manny Ott has played extensively with the senior team against Sri Lanka, at the German training camp, Bahrain friendlies and Kuwait. Looks like he is being groomed to play a key role for the U23s and he's only 19. I hope he gets to start playing for his club's senior side.
Also, does anyone know if the SEA Games U23 tournament allows a fixed number of over-age players to join the squad? If I'm not mistaken, football in the Olympics is a U23 event but allows a team to have a fixed number of over-aged players.

This U23 can be the core group for the next qualification in 2015.

This U23 can be the core group for the next qualification in 2015. There's no doubt about that. The U23 players will be key to that campaign.

www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideSports.htm?f=2011/august/1/sports3.isx&d=2011/august/12 collegiate standouts to join U-23 teamTWO collegiate standouts from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines and a Fil-Belgian aspirant are being considered for the national under-23 men’s football team, which is in the thick of preparations for the coming Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia. National coach Hans Michael Weiss is keeping an eye on the likes of La Salle goalkeeper Patrick Deyto, University of the Philippines striker Jinggoy Valmayor and Fil-Belgian defender Jacques Van Bossche.
The three have shown interest in being a part of the national squad and are among the many 30 aspirants picked to join the practices with the Philippine Azkals, while they were preparing for the 2014 World Cup qualifying games against Kuwait over the past two months. Weiss believes that with the new pool of talents, the Philippines will have chance to become a contender again in the World Cup in four years’ time. “With this effort, we have a chance, and a good group to be developed, with a good average age and new players coming in,” said Weiss. The 6’1” Deyto could take the place of Fil-British goalie Neil Etheridge, who is unsure of his commitment, and may not see action in the SEA Games. Peter Atencio

SEA GAMES FOOTBALL MOVED FROM PALEMBANG
KUALA LUMPUR (1 August 2011) - The Indonesian FA confirmed that the SEA Games football competition would not be held in Palembang as the venue will not be ready in time for the biennially held multi-sports extravaganza later this year.
“The stadium in will not be ready for the SEA Games so the football tournament will now be held entirely in Jakarta,” newly elected Deputy President, Farid Rahman, informed the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Council here yesterday.
As a result of the Jakabaring Stadium being ruled out, the AFF Under-23 Football Championship, which was to serve as a pre-SEA Games warm-up event, has been rescheduled. Originally slated for 16-26 July, the AFF is now trying to identify suitable replacement dates.
Some dates have been proposed, either in late September or mid-October, however there are issues with the availability of the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium where the football competition will be held. According to Farid, the stadium will be undergoing renovation work and will only be ready in late October.
The football competition for the SEA Games is scheduled to start on 7 Nov 2011. The Indonesian FA have been asked to look into the various dates and availability of the stadium and subsequently advise the AFF.

Anyone know who is in the U23 squad? Id like to know if Joshua Beloya is in the squad. From what ive heard, he is a very very interesting player. Might as well have been given a chance for the azkals already since Yannick Tuason already has. Definitly a player for the future, unless PFF do what they usually do, and ignore players outside Manila.

mikeh,
We don't know the composition of the U-23 team yet but last I heard Beloya is definitely part of the pool. As for the PFF, most of our national teams, consist of players who primarily come from the Western Visayas. How could you say that they ignore players from outside Manila?
BTW, Dan Palami is going to Europe in the next few weeks to scout out a few players. I think it might include a visit to Scandinavia bec. of the Nazari brothers in Sweden. You might want to talk to him about some of the other Scandinavian prospects that you know although from what I have heard he is talking to mostly players in the higher tiers of their respective country's leagues.

I know their heritage, but the players that come from Western Visayas are based in Manila, while players based outside Manila usually dont get a chance. Which players on the team are based outside Manila? Except those abroad though. Players would have to move to Manila and either sign for Airforce/Army/Navy team or one of the other UFL teams to get a chance to play for the azkals. Even Paolo Pascual decided to move to Manila from Cebu to strengthen his chances.

Norman Fegidero has been appointed as one of the assistant coaches of the U-23 team and is very familiar with those players in the U23 tournament. I am sure that those players from that tournament who excelled will be given a chance.

You might want to talk to him about some of the other Scandinavian prospects that you know although from what I have heard he is talking to mostly players in the higher tiers of their respective country's leagues. The youth teams always have many players from the provinces, but not for the mens national team. But Norman knows what he is doing. A good coach, and he coached Beloya also if i remember correct. I know that when he was in charge of the azkals, he was for having many provincial players rather than bringing in foreign based players who were out of form, but luckily that has changed. Yeah, i read that Palami will come to Europe. Ive given them info before, but they seem to go for the players who has created a name for themselves already. I still think that a player from for example norwegian 2nd division will definitly boost the U23 team, and they might boost the azkals squad as well, giving it more depth. But thats for Palami to decide. I also think, that the trip will be more of a trip to convince the Nazari bros, and Alphonse Areola. I dont know who the others are, but they should consider players from lower leagues as well, not amateur level, but semi-pro because they might be easier to get released for international duty rather than players who play top level and are important players for their team. And on another note. It might not be so easy to get scandinavian players to play for the azkals if the rules are strict when it comes to have dual citizenship. But might be easier since some of the are still young. Youre american, right? Then you probably know about Mix Diskerud. A norwegian/american player. Plays in Norway. If wikipedia is correct, then his story is funny. In 2008 he played for the USA U20 team, a month later he suited up for Norways U18 team against USA, and in June 2009 he played for the norwegian U19 team, and then back for the USA U20 team, and since then has been capped for USAs mens team. I dont know if any of that info is legit though.
