Since PFF is having difficulties finding opponents for our Azkals, then a match against the Aussies would be a welcome addition hehehe.

english.vietnamnet.vn/fms/sports/82984/vietnam-is-not-the-seed-at-aff-cup-2014.htmlQualifiers still remain, tentative date on October 8, to 19, 2014. Laos to host. Finals date - November 22 to December 20, 2014. AFF is discussing scrapping the home and away format for knockout stages. Vietnam, although is a host for the group stages, may have to go through the qualifiers as they are only 6th place with 12 out of 20 ranking points.

With all the tournaments and opportunities for friendlies coming up, our team will be pretty tired by the Suzuki Cup! Just kidding. Looking forward to a busy 2014! So qualifiers remain? That's too bad. I wonder how that affects Australia's U23 possible inclusion? Sigh, unfortunately, I doubt we'll be able to field our best players for the Suzuki Cup as the European season would be well under way.

In case you don't know, Riedl was the IDN's coach during the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup that defeated us. Here's a news about our possible opponent for the Suzuki Cup. Indonesia Prepare Early for AFF Suzuki Cup 2014JAKARTA (30 Dec 2013) – The FA of Indonesia (PSSI) are preparing early for the AFF Suzuki Cup with selection to begin next week to be followed by centralised training next month. The AFF Suzuki Cup 2014 will be hosted by Vietnam and Singapore. Following the selection process where at least 40 players will attend the centralised training, the PSSI have also arranged for the national side to play in at least 12 friendlies throughout the year. However, the immediate task for newly-appointed Indonesia national coach Alfred Riedl will be their last qualifying match of the 2015 Asian Cup against Saudi Arabia in March. www.aseanfootball.org/v2/?p=15495
I really hope the Azkals will get tons of friendlies this year before this prestigious event. Australia is now included here. They can use their AFC Challenge Cup experience here. Winning the AFC Challenge Cup will make the Azkals more respected team and high expectation in the tourney.

But for the growth in progress and popularity of the sport to continue as it has in recent times locally, I think nothing beats the Suzuki Cup. Indonesia has gotten really strong with their new naturalized talent. I felt we got beaten viciously in our last friendly with them. They're definitely a team to watch out for.

People always seem to associate the MNT's progress or lack of with the growth and popularity of the sport domestically... the usual if the MNT doesn't qualify for this, win this or win that, it will be a detriment to the growth/progress and popularity of the sport as a whole in the country. It's retarded! If the MNT underachieves or fails to reach a certail goal, and the popularity and progress of the sport does decline, then it's only because those supposed "fans" that stop supporting the MNT or the game in general aren't real fans! Simple! They're your typical band wagoners that are there just for the ride because it's the in thing! This mentality is also a source for over the top expectations. It needs to stop/change!!

I'm in total agreement with you. It shouldn't be the case but for whatever reason that's the way it is for fandom about not just football but almost anything. Fandom, bandwagoners and otherwise, is about financial support as well. Being the "in thing" brings in money and sponsorships not just to our national teams but to the sport in general due to the increase in interest. And for football in particular, growth requires lots and lots of money. And, for better or worse, the Philippines in general looks at the Suzuki Cup as the benchmark since it was arguably responsible for the resurgence of football in the country after 2010. I personally don't consider it as important as the Challenge Cup but due to the extended reach and better coverage the local and international media provides the Suzuki Cup, that's what most people here will see and care about. I too long for the day when the success and failure of the national team won't affect general interest in football (i.e. the Philippines becoming a true "footballing nation") but we're still quite a long way from that point.

These bandwagon fans happen to bring in much needed money and support. Because of them, we can now watch games on local tv. Do you remember what it was like before these fans became fans? Just a match report, and if your lucky, pictures.

The Aussies is not listed in the preliminary list for the EAFF East Cup competition(probably not invited) which they did last time. This might mean that they have decided to join the 2014 Suzuki Cup instead, now that they are officially AFF members: www.eaff.com/eanews/release/2014/0115.html

This is the next major tournament that they will be playing.
Watch the draw on August 2014 in Hanoi. As of now, still not clear whether AUS will join or not. Let's see for further updates soon.
Looking forward to this event. But before this tourney, we should have a massive training and friendlies before this.

Australia would be stupid not to join. 12 teams would be fantastic.
