Thailand-Philippines renew Asean rivalry In the show case match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup group ‘B’ qualifiers, top ranked Thailand lock horns with spirited Philippines at the Bangabandhu National Stadium at 4pm today. Though Thailand, who are ranked 29 in the Fifa ranking, are rated above their 83 ranked opponents, the difference may prove to be nothing more than a number. Philippines routed Iran 6-0 in their opening match, while Thailand drubbed Bangladesh 9-0 on the same day. Today’s winner will take a giant leap towards the group championship. Both the team showed superb skills, but it was Philippines who caught the eyes as they stunned Iran with three goals in the first four minutes. Their application, anticipation and energy at the time seemed to overwhelm Iran, who are ranked 53. Thailand on the other hand, had very little difficulty against Bangladesh, and once they got off the block it was overall a one-way traffic. The interesting 3-6-1 formation of the Philippines can disrupt the free flowing game of the Thai footballers. The midfield possession will be the key to success, as both the team rely a lot on it. The notion of using six midfielders by Philippines categorically indicates that they have got players who can create a lot of pressure with their speed. However, the Thai players are sound technically and tactically and may shrug off the challenges with their control and possession. Thailand showed their temperament against Bangladesh, as they took time to settle during the early minutes and never looked out of focus. Thailand depend on fleet footed skipper Naphat Seesraum, who paves the way for her fellow attackers and also is able to score herself. Her amazing sidevolley in the second half against Bangladesh rocked the crosspiece much to her dismay, but it showed her class. Nisa Romyen scored four goals against Bangladesh and the number 23 looks formidable in the opposition D-box. Sunisa Srangthaisong and Boontan Anonghat are also livewires in the Thai attack. Philippines have their answers in wily forward Jesse Anne Shugg, who loves to explore through the midfield. Joana Houplin, Heather Cooke and Megan Marie Jurado are the other formidable names in the Philippine arsenal. Thai coach Piyakul Kawnamkang is a firm believer of his teams efficiency. “We want to continue the winning streak. It’s a new day and new match, Philippines is a strong opponent but we are capable of winning,” said Piyakul Philippines coach Ernie Nierras for his part, is ready to fight. “We are ready to face the challenge. My team has the players who can make the difference, we will take the field to win,” said Ernie. dhakatribune.com/football/2013/may/22/thailand-philippines-renew-asean-rivalry
