back in 1991 sea games ,which was held in manila phils. the phil football team entered the semifinals in football after drewing with vietnam 2-2 & miraculously beating malaysia 1-0, eventually the phil team finished at a respectable 4th place. now compared to the present national team which team is better?what's your take guys? (note: the 1991 national team was all composed of homegrown talents such as elmer bedia, rudy del rosario, melo sabacan, norman figiderio, judy saluria & others)

hahahaha. This may be a long thread of discussion. I cant say anything from the past NT team coz I never saw them play. Before anything starts here, lets refrain from drawing a line between local based pinoy and the foreign based pinoys. Lets think of it this way, they are all pinoy with different Zip codes on their mailing address

i'm not drawing a line between the local & foreign breed players i'm just curious on how many filipino football fans knew about the 1991 national team. i was comparing the two teams based on their achievements(so far its almost equal) not bec. of the fact that the 1991 team was composed of local players & that the present team is composed of foreign bred filipino players. peace!

What difference does it make? They are all Filipinos, whether half or full...Let's not try to make a big deal out of our foreign based Azkals players as it could affect their performance on the field! We should be behind them 100% no matter what...

Go Azkals! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

Not to take anything away from the 1991 RP team, I think the standard of football has gone up since that time. The professional leagues in the different countries have become stronger and players become better as a result. So while other countries have been making huge strides in professional football, our country has been, in certain years, stagnant.
It is only during this decade has there been an attempt at a come back. And to do that we needed to recruit foreign born Filipinos who have had the kind of footballing education our locals couldn't have.

I believe Beho's question is innocent and that he's not drawing the line between locals and fil-foreigners.
Also, in the early 1990s, the concept of getting fil-foreigners was unheard (if not absent) I think this started with the failed experiment by Patafa on David Bunevacz.
But to which of the two teams is better, 91 or 10? For me, it's this year's team and it's simply because I've seen them play and I didn't see the other team. That's the difficulty when you try to compare folks of different eras.
See you this Thursday! Wear blue but we won't be blue!

i've seen them play on PTV-4 replays. that was such a long time ago when i was still in high school. i will confidently say that the current team is way much better, now we can clearly see ball possession and positional play by the Azcals while that team from 1991 is just plainly running and kicking not to disparage them but try look at their game if you can still find old footages of those games. As for the full-breed half-breed differentiation, it is not a concern. If we rely on local talents, we could have no hope of competing against our SEA neighbors. They have such a well established league. We could have the locally born potential Ronaldo, Messi etc. but without the proper foundation, experience and exposure all that they could ever be is just a "potential". We should be thankful of them for lending their services to our national team despite the initial lack of support. Anyway, almost all country our doing it. If not half-breed, they would try to send out all their best players to play in European leagues to gain the much needed experience and exposure. Hoping next year we could get some players from our German-born and other Euro-based brethren...

i was only 2 years old when the 1991 team played so i can't make a fair comparison i agree with the comment about the game changing since then. even in england, the game has evolved a LOT from 1991-2010. in 1991 there wasn't even a premier league yet. there has been a huge increase commercial funding/sponsorship, level medical technology, globalization, travel/scouting of players, etc. etc. so in my opinion it's useless to make comparisons. we should just appreciate this team for what it is, right now. mas swerte tayo ngayon, may internet na, so it's easier to keep support alive, and to participate, kahit fans lang tayo

1991 RP TEAM 1 - 2010 PH TEAM 1...Draw

1991 RP TEAM 1 - 2010 PH TEAM ...Draw are `you serious about this, can you still remember the 1991 national team play? the 1991 phil. team lacked size their goalkeeper's height (melo sabacan) i believe is only 5 feet four inches & their sweeper is (judy saluria) who's only five feet five, however what the 1991 lacked in size they made it all up in heart & the craftiness of their frontline especially elmer bedia the phil. team remained competitive throughout the whole tourney, believe me the games were held here, i was there at the rizal football field, & believe me the phil team gave the other asean teams a serious run for their money! & your prediction of 1-all is plausible.
