can't help but LOL at the trying to play down the loss here by saying okay lang dahil they were expected to lose. that applied before the game wherein on paper vietnam is the stronger team but anything can happen during a game thus that didn't apply anymore during the game because we all saw it was winnable or drawable had the coach change the plan to a defensive one. instead from the very start of the 2nd half we can all clearly see our players still going for the attack.

I'm watching the game too... paki explain lng po bakit same result as the vietnam game? Kasi pag di naayos ng depensa natin yung mga kailangan pagbutihan nila sa susunod na laban, like our horrible execution and over-reliance on the offside trap that leaves our defense flatfooted if it failed, magkakaroon ng maraming oportunidad yung kalaban maka goal.

sheajane,
why don't you just put your thoughts in one post instead of repeating them over and over in response to numerous posts. a lot of us might agree with some of what you say, but you don't have to take over the thread by repeating them over and over again.

I've watched the replay, here's just my non-expert observation. We've been beaten by a much better team who made a better adjustment in the game. Our defense lost steam in the second half. Our left wing been attack constantly, no adjustment or poorly adjusted if there's any. Relying solely on GK. but this is mainly caused by poor offside trap, this offside trap had been beaten badly by Vietnam, adding to that are offsides not being called by ref. thanks to Muller for his quick reflexes saving us from at least 8-1 shameful defeat. We should have abandon that offside trap in the second half. But please take note that 2 goals are coming from our right back. One is the own goal that made me say the P.I. words! And which i think surely break the hearts, not only of the fans, but also of our players. Even Weiss had a Monalisa smile after! the other goals needless to say, though the last one was from the left back where our defense was loose trying to score the equalizer in the added 2' time. Still... We have to work on our left back defense which have been abused a lot by Vietnam. Except when we have a chance to counter attack, i didn't see any offense starting from the back, always long ball passes! Why? Afraid to loss the ball near our goal? Our midfielders can't dribble the ball to our forwards? Players not familiar and only have a few practices playing each other? We've lost a lot of possessions from this long balls which clearly explains the 70-30 ball possession advantage of Vietnam. We had our chance of winning or even just tying the match, sayang talaga, if only our defense could have held much longer. Anyway win or lose, i will keep supporting our team, whoever the players, managers, coaches are! I still believe we can reach the semis! Goodluck on our next game! Learn from this lose and adjust accordingly! Take care of the yellow cards, what's the rule regarding this, only 2 consecutive games you'll get the next game suspension or even accumulative?

1. Matthew is more comfortable as a LMF, not as a centerback. Alam na natin yan since LTC. 2. Roland was great in this game. He might even be a better option than Neil for the AFC Challenge Cup. (considering the possible schedule conflicts with Fulham and the willingness for MSV to lend him to us). 3. I was wondering why 5 defenders and Mark was named to the roster. Jerry would have been a huge asset here. Or we are counting on Manny and Jason to be the crutches to fend off initial attacks. 4. They guys who played best are actually the guys who are not really based here (JdJ, Carli, etc.) it shows that we really really need to fix our grassroots level. We have a looooooong way to go. 5. Marky H. has been pilloried all across. You probably saw why in this match. 6. Love the effort shown by Jeff C. Guy has promise. Hope this guy breaks through the ranks in Belgium. He'll be ready to work alongside / replace Chieffy by 2014/15. 7. Yup, It might be too much to ask for Coach Weiss to handle the entire pool here. Need to find someone who'll only handle u-23, etc... This match is not going to make the critics of him feel good.
Give credit where credit is due. Vietnam is really the better team here. Now let's shake off the loss and move on to the next match.

anyways, i finally got back to the thread as I had to go to sleep and then to work afterwards so I haven't had a chance to post my thoughts.
First of all, I wasn't expecting much from this game because of our lack of preparation against a team that was a favorite in our group and was the runner up in the previous edition of the SEA games. I have been following the Vietnamese U-23 team in their preparation for this tournament and I was impressed by the results they were getting. Aside from the fact that a lot of them have had a chance to know each other from their time in the Olympic qualifiers a few months ago, they have also participated in a couple of minitournaments playing strong international sides from the middle east, central asia as well as our SEA neighbors. They have had some impressive results including a 5-0 win over the Myanmar U-23 team which we will be facing next week. Inspite of all that, we gave them a scare in the first half managing a 1-0 lead, against the run of play. Their coach however made the proper adjustments after the break exploiting the weakness on our left side, and we did not and we soon fell apart after that. We couldn't keep the ball and they keep taking taking advantage of our offside trap(either through our own fault as well as some spotty officiating by the linesman) to initiate numerous attacks that were leading to one on one chances that forced our goalkeeper to make the save over and over again. They pretty much dominated every aspect of the game except for goaltending, impressing not only with their ability to keep the ball, speed and passing ability but also in their off the ball movement which clearly showed their experience and maturity as professional footballers.
As has been pointed out, this could have been a massacre and if it weren't for our outstanding goalie Muller, we might be making sober postmortems right now, that this team is not any different from previous editions in past SEA games when we were being similarly outscored by big margins. But the good thing is they still have 4 games to play and we have already played the best team in our group, a group that in paper we should be competitive with. I expect our team to rebound from this loss and hopefully make the semifinals. Anything less would be a disappointment.
N.B. I would like to note that if Roland Muller continues to play like this, Neil is going to have competition for the no. 1 spot in the men's team, which is good for us, as competition prevents complacency and will bring out the best in our goalkeepers.

Agree with jpmanahan that U-23 needs its own coach. Not to mention year-long activities/practices for its 35-man pool. Weiss should still have a hand in the U-23 development (consultant perhaps) so that once the players move up to the men's squad, they won't make too many adjustments since the systems are similar.

what's to talk about?
we all know the outcome...
still the same...
a winnable game just like Kuwait...
and we blow it...
2 different teams, just the same result.
don't blame the players...
blame the person that made them play such a SUCKY game.

hi guys, ive been a lurker on this site and it seems that we've expected a lot for our young lads...why blame? few years ago, walang blame kahit natatalo tayo ng 5 or more goals then just 3 goals?
they will be our future and mas mabuti cguro kung hindi natin sila bigyan ng pressure masyado...wew... let's just support them and i think there are a lot of aspiring coach here...

I don't like crabs as much as you guys too, but last night's match was really just bad. It was good that they ended the first half a goal up, but to give that away and lose 3-1?
I wouldn't have minded much if the goals were given up to really unbeatable play, but the defense that gave away that lead was just so bad, and all from the same side! Even if the game was 2-1 and they still had a chance to salvage a draw they didn't look convincing, counterattacks were unorganized and passes were blind.
I feel bad for Weiss. He should have been left to deal with the senior squad only, its not fair to judge this campaign based on the first game alone but it won't help to cool the flames down. The pressure of managing the senior squad's campaign and now the U23 side too is big. I'm still a Macca fan, he just had more charisma going for him when he was manager compared to Weiss.
