Ochoa is trying out for Fulham? Doesn't look so good for Etheridge. Ochoa is Mexico's first choice keeper, but seemed to drop out of form during the World Cup (and became 2nd choice instead). He seems to be first choice, though, seeing as Perez is nearing retirement. Impressive, considering he was already playing for the NT at such an early age. 19, if I'm not mistaken.
Fulham needs to give Etheridge a chance.

well after all his heroism in the AFF suzuki cup qualifiers and in AFF suzuki cup itself. I think Fulham FC would take notice.
The thing is in the AFF Suzuki cup now he is the best keeper in the tournament sofar..he has only let 1 goal passed him. surely that does not count for nothing.
but fingers cross hope he gets to start for fulham

I'm sure it hasn't escaped Fulham what Etheridge is doing in this here Suzuki Cup. Looking forward to the Indonesia games, if he does well then that elevates his status there even more. I'm always for competition for player positions -- keeps the team sharp. That's the nature of the game. In Fulham Etheridge's main competition is the #3 gk who is 39 years old and whose contract expires at the end of the season in 2011. Etheridge's contract also expires at the same time. I'm hoping that even if Fulham signs Ochoa they will still keep Etheridge instead of the current #3 gk (Zuberbuhler). After all, Etheridge is only 20.

Neil Etheridge will be Fulham'sNo. 1 goalie next season. And that is a big problem for the Azkals because he would not get the time to play for them if he becomes no. 1 at Fulham. Fulham would be crazy if they would not give Neil a fresh contract.

To jackbiantan and markmiguel
I like the confidence that you show in Etheridge, because I do too. After watching the highlights I can see that he is fast, has good positioning, has good hands, and hasn't given up any bad goals. He hasn't wilted under the pressure of an adversarial crowd. And the results speak for themselves.
The current Fulham #1 is Schwarzer of Australia, and he is one of the top in the world. Played in two World Cups and Arsenal wanted to sign him a few months back. The #2 is Stockdale and at 25 yrs old has much more experience than Etheridge and his contract expires in 2013. It would be a stretch to think that Etheridge may challenge him for the #2 spot, but not impossible especially if he excels in the Indonesia games.
What I'm saying is that Etheridge is not yet ready to be #1 at Fulham next season or even the season after that. Maybe in a few years. I hope so. If not Fulham then another top flight club. The most important thing right now is that he experience these pressure-packed games like the upcoming ones with Indonesia, and then when he gets back to the U.K. to play weekly in real games, perhaps by being loaned out (but still technicall be with Fulham) to a lower league team.
Good luck Neil! Wishing you the best in Indonesia!

I think he is the best keeper in Asia right now. Am I to confident with Niel's skills? His agility, positioning and reaction is superb. Any goal keeper in Asia can compete against him pound for pound? Maybe there are better ones but if you consider his age, skills and potential the player value is high.

I saw Etheridge train tonight. Personally I haven't seen his distribution; but very good commanding. A very decent stopper as well - but just not enough for Fulham IMO. He might want to work on stopping skills - a few soft goals got past him today. Other than that, playing for the Philippines should give him enough confidence, and hopefully Fulham can see that.

He plays a psychological factor as well. He's such an imposing figure between the goal posts and exudes sheer confidence. Strikers would have a split-second thought to challenge him and oftentimes that's a split-second too long. Good luck in Europe, Neil! And good luck against Indonesia for all you Azkals!

News today is that Ochoa wasn't signed by Fulham. So that leaves Etheridge still at #4. Both he and the #3 guy have their contracts to expire at the end of the 2011 season (~May).
Here's to having great games against Indonesia!

fulham needs to squeeze a couple of geezers in their line up. schwarzer needs to retire from EPL and go back to australia and help his A-League. such a crappy league that no one pays attention to.

Etheridge will be signing an extension with Fulham. I guess he feels that he's getting closer to being the Cottager's #1. The original plan with Ochoa was to loan him from Club America since Schwarzer will be playing in the AFC (accdg to goal.com). But America and Ochoa's agent doesn't want a loan spell. wala lang. share ko lang Schwarzer might be transferred at the end of the season since Fulham has some financial problems.
